From the wrestling ring to the silver screen to the news desk, Tyrus has led an eclectic life and built an unexpected career across diverse industries. Known for his hulking 6-foot-8, 400-pound frame and bigger-than-life personality, Tyrus first made a colorful name for himself in professional wrestling under monikers like Brodus Clay and The Funkasaurus. His talents later transitioned successfully into acting roles and political commentary.
Born George Murdoch in 1973 in the gritty Boston neighborhood of the South End, Tyrus endured exceptional hardship from a young age. After his mother abandoned the family, leaving his sister to raise him, Tyrus turned to sports as an outlet from the trauma, playing basketball and football through high school. He earned a basketball scholarship to Morris Brown College on his towering height and natural athleticism, only to see his college hoop dreams derailed shortly after starting school when a severe leg injury forced him to drop out.
Unemployed and still nursing his damaged limb, Tyrus fell through difficult times. He took on work as a bouncer and bodyguard to make ends meet in some of Boston's roughest nightlife spots. In an unlikely twist of fate, a chance meeting with independent professional wrestlers at one of Tyrus’ security jobs opened his eyes to a new career path. Undaunted by his lack of formal training, Tyrus placed himself under the tutelage of revered WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, who took the raw athlete under his wing. Tyrus cut his teeth grappling on the northeast independent circuit, credibly battling the likes of established talents like Scott Steiner and Bill Goldberg. When World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) came calling with a contract offer in 2006, Tyrus leapt at the opportunity to bring his brawling style to the global stage.
After honing his craft for several years in WWE's Ohio Valley Wrestling and Deep South developmental leagues, Tyrus finally debuted on WWE's NXT program in 2010 under the ring name Brodus Clay. Originally cast as a brooding, intimidating monster heel, Clay underwent a radical character reboot in 2012 when WWE reintroduced him as The Funkasaurus - a wildly energetic, funk-fueled dancer who shimmied his way to the ring accompanied by the gorgeous Funkadactyls cheerleaders. As The Funkasaurus, Tyrus captured the imaginations of WWE audiences with his unexpected comedic flair and surprising nimbleness until his amicable release from the promotion in June 2014.
With skeptics questioning if he was anything more than a dancing spectacle, Tyrus proved the doubters wrong when he joined Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling months later in 2014. Competing under his classic moniker Tyrus, the big man displayed the versatility that WWE never fully exploited - racking up TNA's prestigious World Tag Team and World Television titles thanks to his sheer size, intimidating presence, and deceptive athleticism. After a successful three-year run, cementing his status as a highly capable wrestler, Tyrus parted ways with TNA in 2017 to explore new opportunities. His decorated career reached an emotional peak in 2021 when Tyrus signed with the revered National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) promotion and soon after captured their world championship in front of a raucous crowd – a crowning career achievement after decades of hard work.
With plenty still to offer inside the ropes, Tyrus also embarked on an unlikely second act, branching out from wrestling over the last decade. He landed his first major acting role as a bodyguard in the 2016 Marlon Wayans comedy Meet the Blacks and later flexed his comedic chops in other films like Chrisley Knows Best. His unmistakably deep, smoky voice has led to voice acting gigs in animated fare like Scoob! and primetime series like American Dad. But perhaps his most unexpected career shift came in 2019, when Fox News tapped Tyrus to bring his bombastic personality and plain-spoken perspective to their political talk programming as an analyst and commentator. As he naturally fluctuated from funny to serious on camera as he was commanding the ring, Tyrus proved a rising star on the conservative network, being named co-host of the late-night show Gutfeld! in 2021 for his unpredictable wit and commentary reflecting his own working-class background.
From the unforgiving streets of Boston to headlining major events like WrestleMania, from struggling in obscurity to sharing top billing with Hollywood's top comedy stars, from fighting stereotypes to sparring verbally with cable news heavyweights, Tyrus continues to find new worlds to conquer with the same bold, rebellious spirit that helped him prevail against long odds. For this modern-day Renaissance man who defies easy labels, his winding, unprecedented journey makes for a compelling story with plenty still left unwritten at just 49 years old. The next unpredictable chapter promises to be as entertaining and unexpected as those already penned for a true trailblazer.
The challenges Tyrus faced growing up were compounded by his biracial identity. Born in 1973, his father was a 19-year-old black man while his mother was a 15-year-old white girl. Intensely in love but still naive teenagers, neither was fully prepared for the responsibilities of parenting. However, the greatest strains stemmed from perspectives on race.
"My mother's parents didn't approve of her dating a black guy, much less having kids with one," Tyrus reflected. "When she got pregnant, they basically disowned her." Cut off from familial support, the young couple relied on low-paying jobs and government assistance, paired with inadequate life skills, to provide for two children. The pressures soon overwhelmed the relationship.
When Tyrus was still a toddler, his father unleashed a horrific act of domestic violence that shattered the family. In a drunken rage, he lashed out and struck Tyrus directly in the eye, detaching his retina. As Tyrus remembers it, "Blood was pouring out of my eye and I couldn't see a thing." His mother seized the chance amidst the chaos to flee with her sons to her parents' home. However, because Tyrus and his older brother were biracial, their mother's parents refused to take them in. They only reluctantly allowed their daughter to stay temporarily while recovering from her injuries.
