Kinsley is bored. And that spells TROUBLE!
It always spells trouble, especially today.
This morning no one will play with her. Everyone is too busy to notice her. She feels rejected. She feels unloved. Just like the old smelly sneakers she tossed into the garbage, Kinsley feels unwanted.
Yep, trouble is brewing.
Kinsley calls to Muffin, her furry best friend. “Come on, girl, let’s get out of here.”
Muffin cocks her head. Uh-oh, I’ve heard that tone before. What’s up? Where are we going?
Kinsley dashes out the back door. She bounces down the steps and motions Muffin to follow.
Hey, wait up, kid. I just woke up from my nap. On the porch, Muffin yawns, stretches her legs and ambles down the steps.
“Come on, girl. No time to fiddle-faddle around. There’s a great big world out here to see.” Kinsley throws her hands into the air. She twirls ’round and ’round and almost falls down.
Muffin’s head spins. Whoa! You’re making me dizzy. She flops to the ground and rolls onto her back. She blinks, trying to focus on the fluffy white clouds above. Flitting overhead, a blurry dragonfly darts toward a tasty mosquito snack.
“Who’s ready for some fun?” says Kinsley.
Me, me, barks Muffin while springing to her feet. Her ears perk up with anticipation. She chases her tail. Hurry, hurry, tell me where we’re going.
Kinsley laughs. “Can’t tell. It’s a secret.”
Secret? snarls Muffin. Best friends don’t keep secrets.
Kinsley skips along, teasing Muffin as she points to a white cottage with pale blue shutters and window boxes filled with colorful cascading flowers. On the front porch, sitting in a swing, Aunt Dot-Dot is waiting. Today she’s wearing her signature polka dot garden apron and fanning herself with a floppy sun hat. She’s surrounded by baskets of blueberries.
“Hurry, kids,” calls her aunt as she waves to the pair. “I’ve got fresh blueberry muffins and orange juice.”
“Terrific,” calls Kinsley. “Some yummy for my tummy.”
Muffin licks her mouth.
Midway to the cottage, Kinsley stops. Looking down at Muffin, she grins. “I’ll race you to the porch. Last one has to eat a bug.”
No way, woofs Muffin.
Before Kinsley can shout RUN, Muffin springs into action. With short legs pumping, her paws pound the turf. Her ears fly behind her head as her long tail fans the air.
Kinsley sprints toward the furball ahead of her. “Cheater, cheater!”
Bug eater, bug eater! barks Muffin as she dashes for the lip-smacking prize waiting on a white wicker table.
Aunt Dot-Dot claps. “Run, Kinsley, run.”
Muffin tags the steps first and doggy-grins at the loser. Bug eater, bug eater!
Huffing and puffing, Kinsley collapses on the front lawn. Sprawled on the ground, she clutches her chest. “I’m dying over here, but does anyone care?”
Ohmygosh! Ohmygosh! barks Muffin as she leaps off the porch and runs to Kinsley’s side.
Kinsley’s head flops sideways. Her tongue hangs out. Her eyes roll back in her head.
Ohmygosh! Ohmygosh! whines Muffin. She licks Kinsley’s face with her long tongue. Don’t die. Please don’t die. I’ll never cheat again, promise.
Kinsley groans.
Muffin whimpers, If you wake up, I’ll even eat a bug.
Opening one eye, Kinsley giggles. “Ha! That’s a double promise.”
You’re alive, you’re alive! barks Muffin.
“Gotcha!” Kinsley jumps to her feet and prissy-walks to the porch.
Huh! barks Muffin. She low-growls at Kinsley. Look who’s the cheater now.
“Sorry, girl, couldn’t help myself—had to prank you.”
Muffin grumble-growls at her opponent.
Kinsley pats her leg. “Come on, girl. Still friends?”
Undecided, Muffin glares.
