On a snowy morning, Kinsley and her furry best friend Muffin awaken to a strange noise—the banging of broken shutters on the old shed. It alerts them that the double doors are flung open wide.
During the night an intruder has stolen a valuable family treasure—a famous 1928 Model A Ford they fondly named Betty Boop.
Why did he steal it?
The mystery deepens as Kinsley, along with her aunt and Muffin, team up with a quirky investigator to find the culprit. Yet all clues lead to a dead end.
Where did he hide it?
Hope fades. Will they ever find their beloved Betty Boop?
But hope returns. They find a strange clue left by the thief. A dealer in antiques says it’s more valuable than the missing car. They now have a rare bargaining tool.
But even if they locate the thief, will he take the bait and negotiate?

Flying Snowballs

Chapter 1

Kinsley snores. Her lips flutter like a pesky pony on a cold wintry day. Her snorts and snores awaken her furry best friend.

Huh! What’s all the racket? mumbles Muffin as she edges closer to Kinsley’s side.

Kinsley pulls the covers over her head. “Brrr, it’s cold, my feet are freezing.” She groans. Her locks lie cold against her rosy cheeks. Her frigid toes frantically search for the warmth of her furry friend. With no luck, she squirms and kicks the covers, accidentally sending Muffin tumbling to the floor.

Hey, what’s going on? First you wake me with weird sounds, then you kick me out of bed. Some friend you are.

Shortly, Muffin hears another strange sound—tapping, slapping, scratching on the window. She hates creepy sounds and scary movies. Even the rustling of leaves on the front lawn makes her jumpy.

Easing toward the window, she sniffs the floor. Her nose twitches, rising high in the air for signs of danger. She barks, I'm the Muff, I'm tough. The hair on her back bristles. Her back legs scratch the floor as she growls, No fear here.

Once at the window, Muffin directs her eyes skyward to the scratching sound. She snaps the air.

"Hush, scaredy pants," calls Kinsley. "It's only a branch from the willow tree. Come back to bed."

Muffin stares out the window. She yips and yaps at a very unusual sight. Ohmygosh! Ohmygosh! What is it?

Never has she seen such a strange sight.

She cocks her head. She stares in amazement. She barks, What is this stuff falling from the sky? Are the clouds breaking apart? Is it the end of the world? Ohmygosh! Ohmygosh! I must alert the family.

Runningto Kinsley’s bed, she yelps, Hey, wake up, kid! The sky is falling. It’s falling all around. It’s on the ground, it's in the trees. It's everywhere!

Kinsley yawns. “Quiet, Muffin. It’s a lazy Saturday.”

Hey, it’s not lazy. Look! It’s crazy.

Pulling the covers over her head, Kinsley huffs, "Silly dog."

Muffin paws the side of the bed, tugging mounds of cover on top of her head. She barks another alarm, Wake up, sleepyhead,it’s a national emergency!

“Hush, naughty pooch,” scolds Kinsley. “Go back to sleep.”

No way! The sky is falling.

Kinsley squints and opens one eye. “Okay, okay, I get the picture. You’re hungry. Right?”

No-no! barks Muffin as she runs in circles. Who can eat at a time like this? My stomach is doing flip-flops. She tugs and pulls the pink sheet with its white stars and yellow moons off the bed and runs back to the window.

Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, Kinsley stares at the nervous dog. “Hey, what’s up?”

Arf-arf. Muffin’s high-pitched yelps alert Kinsley that something is wrong—very wrong.

Little Miss Sleepyhead shakes a finger at the rowdy pooch. “This better be good, young lady, or you’ll be in soooooo much trouble.”

From the hall Aunt Dot-Dot’s voice rings out. “Kinsley, Kinsley, rise and shine, kiddo. It’s a great day to be a kid. Look outside, sweetie.”

No-no! barks Muffin. It’s a terrible, horrible day. The sky is falling. Run! Hide! Escape! It’s the end of the world. Muffin dashes under the bed. She shivers.

Kinsley races to the window. “Snow! Snow!” she shouts. “It’s SNOWING!”

Muffin whimpers from under the bed, Ohmygosh! Ohmygosh! I’m too young to die. Will snow kill me?

Aunt Dot-Dot chuckles. “What’s up with the mutt?”

“I think she’s afraid of snow,” says Kinsley. “She’s scared of her own shadow.”

Muffin peeks out from under the bed. Is it safe to come out?

“Don’t be silly,” says Kinsley. “It’s snow. It’s only the greatest thing on earth. It’s better than cupcakes or blueberry muffins.”

Muffin belly-crawls toward Kinsley. Really?

Looking out the window, Kinsley claps and twirls in place. “Come see, Muffin. Snow is everywhere.”

Aunt Dot-Dot and Muffin join Kinsley at the window.
