I dedicate this book to my children, Leda and Gabriel, and to my professors who encouraged me to write, as well as to all people who believe in dreams.
The moon was high, illuminating the dark forest, and there she was, racing against time, in a hurry, she could only think that she had to protect the little child she carried in her arms.
She crossed the valley of stones, walked through the clearing in the moonlight, entered the path of the hydrangeas, passed through the valley of the fireflies and went on crossing the stream, almost stumbling, but she remained steadily, running ever more and more. Her strength was already running low, but she looked ahead and glimpsed the great stone arch, formed by the nature’s engineering. She had to arrive and she was close to her destination.
She had to escape from that persecution that endangered both her life and that of the little one. Almost out of breath, she reached the fairies’ corner.
Exhausted and very hurt, staggering already, and in a weakened voice, by the enormous effort, she asked for help, with the suffering and sadness stamped on her face.
The fairies, hurriedly, came to her aid, and soon they saw that beautiful baby in her arms.
Her eyes, full of tears and pain, was still showing the happiness that she had managed to get there, knowing that her little girl would be protected.
The fairies rushed to help, and the master fairy came to meet her, asking:
— Queen Minerva! What happened? What happened?
—They have invaded the castle. The king is dead. I can’t let them take her too. Please, hide and take care of her. Do not let anyone know who she is, until she reaches the age of fully discovering of her powers and can restore the power of our kingdom – said the Queen in tears. – Please, promise me that you will take care of her for me and that she will be safe, far from this world, for we will live times of great destruction from now on, we will be in the domain of intense evil. Go beyond the portal of dimensions and take her to the world of humans. She will be safe there. Avoid any contact, so she will not be discovered! – Added the Queen.
Looking at the innocent child in her arms, she tenderly kissed the little girl and sighed.
— Oh, my beautiful baby... I love you!
And in a gesture of transposing all her energies, the beautiful queen touched her heart with her hand and out of her body came an intense light, an extraordinarily strong energy that shone in that very place. The stars aligned in the sky and a triangle of light came down from heaven embracing both. In that very instant she transmitted all her energy to that little child.
She placed the girl in the master fairy’s lap and, holding the baby’s hand, began to slowly disappear in front of the eyes of those fairies who were all present.
Queen Minerva, now with a sublime physiognomy, gradually disintegrated and like tiny particles of light she was raised up by the triangle formed by the stars that lined up there.
Around the child an intense blue light softened by bright white rays became, and on his wrist two half-faces were drawn.
They were two faces, one back turned to the other, which represented good and evil. A struggle between two deities, where only one may win.
— This symbol means the light that we all have, but also the darkness that we possess. It depends on each and every one of us to know which one of the faces will direct our lives. Because the two go hand in hand, each one of us has a bit of good and evil, but it is up to us to decide what will prevail - said the fairy master.
The fairies, still stunned by the unexpected event, were staring at that child in the lap of the master fairy, petrified, without knowing what to do.
The master fairy was a beautiful woman named Gaia. Her hair was blond, with grayish white reflections, long, under her shoulders, and curly, resembling the hair of an angel. She wore a beautiful light blue dress with a veil, lace sleeves tight on her arm, but close to her wrist, they opened and became a triangle shaped like a cone. At the waist, there was a golden cordon that was woven on the side of her body, and at each end was a star. In the corner of the fairies she was the one who possessed the forest’s power of protection, possessing also the magic of the four elements: earth, water, wind and fire.
Looking at the little child on her lap, the fairy master said to the others:
— Prepare the mushrooms, let us provide her a comfortable night. This child needs rest. Alert the fireflies to go to elsewhere and do not light up here anymore. Flowers and leaves, ask the lianas to cover us with roots as dense and worn out as possible. Tonight, we cannot have even a ray of light around here. We will have to turn this place into something as dark as possible, as they are still looking for the princess, and we must remember that the light of the triangle in the sky may have been seen by all, so they must know that Queen Minerva is gone. Lords crickets and frogs, go to another region, make an orchestrated symphony as beautiful as they have ever done, to mislead the persecutors. Today we cannot have any kind of sound that leads to our refuge. Mushrooms and large trees turn into dead and lifeless trees. Flowers just look like dried dead branches. We must turn this place into a dark and scary swamp so they will not notice we are here.
And everyone began to follow the guidance of the master fairy.
In a few minutes that place was like a swamp so dark and lifeless, with a cold mist, that one would shiver down only by looking.
Thus, the master fairy intended to hide the beautiful princess named Maia. That night, everyone in the room was silent, waiting until the pursuers passed by.
In no time the silence, which was absolute, was broken by some voices approaching.
They were the evil beings looking for the princess Maia.
— Let’s go! Search all the places. She could not have gone far, she’s hurt, she must be looking for the help of the fairies – said the commander of that chase.
The commander was a kind of half-animal and half-man, with the trunk of man’s anatomy. He was wearing a tunic that reached down to his knees, open at the sides of his legs. From the waist down, it had legs and a tail, as well as the face, which resembled a giant crocodile. On the back of his head were three fins, and beneath them was a sort of half-metal helmet that matched the large collar on his neck, also in metal. His nails were large, his fingers were long, and his arms, muscled. In one hand he carried an enormous spear, which on one side had a smaller, thinner tip, like a scythe, and on the other side was square, like an axe. He walked on legs that resembled the wrinkled skin of a crocodile. It was as if it were a man, but half man and half animal. His name was Distis.
— But fairies do not stay in marshes, sir – said one of the pursuers.
The other that accompanied him was enormous, extremely strong, and the likeness with a crocodile was even greater, only the region of his belly seemed like one of a man. He was taller than the commander, his size was scary, he carried no weapon with him, and had only an old tunic secured by a silver cord around his waist. He had a dark and ruthless look, a macabre irony marking his face. Her name was Hotra.
— Listen to the crickets, they’re probably going to come to them for help – Commander Distis observed.
— Yes, you’re right, sir – said another being, also enormous, with the same resemblance of physiognomy between them, but this one was dressed in armor all carved in light gray metal and held a spear in which two very large hoists made sharp edges. There was a scary physiognomy in his face. He stood all the time raising his head up, as if he were sniffing something through the air. That was really his job in that group, the tracker and sniffer, his name was Rasfeja.
— I hear them heading north. Aside from being a nice snack meal, we can find traces of them in that direction – said the scary Hotra.
All of them had a semblance of half man half crocodile look.
— Let’s go to another area. They’re not around here. If they had passed this way, there would be at least the trail of green grass on the ground, and there is nothing here but swamp – muttered one of the pursuers.
The commander, who was cunning and big but more imposing, stared at a tree and his eyes turned red, his face was clear malice. Fixing a branch and stirring it, he said:
— Weird. If here is a swamp, why is this trunk still so young?
Quickly the tree dropped one of its branches which, as it touched the ground, fell apart.
— Yeah, it looks like the tree is half dead, sir. It couldn’t stand even a single touch. You see? It’s broken already – one of the soldiers laughed mockingly.
The cunning big-captain Distis turned to the other side and said:
— Let’s go east. We can’t waste any more time. We need to find them before the queen gives her energy to the child.
And they followed him. They were so obsessed with their quest that they did not even notice the skies flickering with the stars aligning at the time the queen was charging her energy to the little princess.
After a few hours of absolute silence and holding back the comments, the fairies spoke again.
— Ready! They’re gone, we’re safe now – said the Hemera fairy, holding her moon bracelet.
Hemera was a beautiful fairy, known as the fairy of the day and night. With long gray light hair, she had a two colors dress: on one side, a very pale blue with beautiful designs of sun embroidered in gold; On the other side, a dark blue with beautiful silver stars. Looking at her dress, one would feel like if she were dressing the sky itself: on one side, a starry blue night; On the other, a beautiful sky on a splendid sun day. Her waist was more in tune because of the lilac bodice that matched her booties. In addition to the moon-shaped bracelet on the other arm, she had a sun-shaped bracelet with beautiful, thin chokers hanging and forming a beautiful ornament.
— Oh, poor tree! We are so sorry for your twig - penalized, said the fairy Hebe.
As she always liked to make new potions, the fairy Hebe soon thought of a spell for the tree. The fairy Hebe had black hair, with a small beret on the head in the shape of a white flower, which looked more like an ornament over her hair. She wore red gloves to the shoulders, with embroidery, and boots of the same color up to the thighs. On the edges of his boots, a beautiful embroidery matching the hat. The purple bodice decorated with veiled fabric matched her skirt in an almost blue tone; Beside it, a perfect ribbon, always with some tiny jars. She always had with her a tiny lizard that looked like a mini dragon, which by the way, always very clumsy, sometimes fell of her shoulder. The tone of her dress made her thick lips stand out. She was a beautiful fairy.
— It doesn’t matter, Fairy Hebe, it will soon be restored, it was necessary to ensure the safety of all – said the kindly tree.
Then the night passed, with the search for the princess and the queen by the evil soldiers, which followed devastatingly elsewhere in that forest.
At dawn, at the first rays of the sun, the fairies decided to continue their journey, since in daylight it would be more difficult for them to be seen, since they could turn into dragonflies, even to camouflage and gain more agility in the forest.
— And now, Master Gaia, what shall we do? How are we going to take the child into the world of humans? – Asked Fairy Hemera.
— Call the beavers. We will have to follow through the underground to get to the river Letes. Then we will take Princess Maia to Fort Star, where there is a village nearby – said the master fairy.
