Chapter One

Ken came into my office, flung himself on the sofa and tossing an ankle over a knee said;

"Tell me again why we want Mort Panludd?"

I didn't glance up from my computer screen;  "Because he's an idiot."

Completing what I was doing I came to him.   We lit cigarettes, (sure, there's no smoking in the building. That's why the smoke detectors have been trashed, the windows opened, and I always have the most suffocating flowers by the door) and said;

"Our department is overfunded, overstaffed and does nothing. A sensible Chairman would cut us by 80%. Mort's an idiot. A loud mouthed, uncouthed slob whose lived off Daddy's money all his life."

"Sherry, the guy will humilate us in public!"

"Exactly!" I smiled.

Ken and I had come into the company right out of college. We were optimistic, positive, focused, committed, name every great trait you want in an employee and we had it.

Our first Chairman was a decent guy. He listened at Board meetings, then he considered. That was our only issue, the long time it took for him to grasp a concept.

He left after two years.

The next Chairman was an older woman who was not in especially good health. A lot of things had to be done without her involvement. It wasn't an issue, we knew what we were doing.

She was replaced by the Boss from Hell.

During his tenure we hated our jobs. Being under contract meant we couldn't just walk out.  To survive with a rag of self-esteem, we did a number of things not suitable for public display. We did it to retaliate for him making our lives so hard.

It was the only way we could complete our contracts.
