ME BEFORE YOU IS ABOUT A YOUNG MAN, WILL TRAYNOR, WHO LIVES IN the United Kingdom. Will is vivacious and full of energy, living a life of adventure; among many other things, he’s climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and traveled through Kenya and China. He has a superb job and a beautiful girlfriend. However, one day his life changes dramatically following a traffic accident. Will is struck by a motorcycle as he is getting into a taxi. As a result, he is paralyzed and loses the ability to use all four of his limbs. He spends the next two years going to doctors and receiving therapy. However, his mobility is not the only thing he loses. As the story progresses, he also loses his house and his girlfriend.
Frustrated and disillusioned, Will decides to voluntarily end his life by traveling to Switzerland where assisted suicide is legal. When he tells his parents, they immediately reject his plan. After Will tries to commit suicide himself, his parents finally agree to allow Will to end his life with by assisted suicide. However, they tell Will that he must give them six months before he goes to Switzerland. He agrees.
Lou Clark is twenty-six years old. She recently lost her job at a cafe. Her family depends on her income to support them and are troubled when they learn that Lou has lost her job. While searching for new employment, Lou visits a job center, where she finds an employment ad seeking a home care aide and companion for a disabled man. Will's mother, Camilla, hires Lou in hopes that she will help rekindle Will’s zeal for life.
Lou soon learns of Will's suicide attempt after seeing the scars on his wrists. Lou then realizes that her main job is not to care for Will’s physical needs, but to keep Will from attempting suicide again. When she learns of this, she quits immediately. Camilla begs Lou not to leave; Lou agrees to stay as long as the Traynors allow her to do whatever she feels is necessary to preserve Will's life. The Traynors agree.
Lou attempts to show Will that life is worth living, despite the challenges he faces as a quadriplegic. She takes Will to the island nation of Mauritius off the coast of Madagascar. Lou and Will fall in love, but Will still intends to commit assisted suicide. Will travels to Switzerland, and Lou wanting to see him one last time, soon follows. When she arrives at the clinic, they both reflect on the previous six months and agree that their time together has been the best months of their lives. Will leaves a large amount of money for Lou so she can travel and continue her education: His death was peaceful.
