For days, the streets have been blocked by thousands of people to show their support. Day after day they come, travelling from all over the country, people show no fear to demonstrate their will of change. Although he rarely speaks to the crowd, the support is bigger than ever. On the fringes you can see artists, labors and students, though most are still showing considerable caution, since everything is more volatile than ever.

Introduction

Through books we come into contact with everything important that has happened in the past, analyzing also current events and putting our thoughts together to predict the future. The book is a window to the world, acquiring valuable knowledge and sparking our vivid imagination. It is a means of entertainment and is generally seen as a best friend, or as a slave that carries together all valuable information for us. The book is a friend who stays together without demands, a friend you call upon at every moment and abandon when you want.

It accompanies us in the hours of boredom and loneliness, while at the same time it entertains us. In general, a book does not ask anything from us, while it waits patiently on a dusty shelf to give us its information, to get us out of dead ends and to travel us to magical worlds.

This may be the travel mission of our books. Abstract narration, weird or unconscious thoughts difficult to be understood, but always genuine and full of life experiences, these are stories of life that can’t be overlooked easily.

This may be the start of something amazing!

Chapter One

Rundi returned his commander a steely stare before answering not liking the politically based question. ‘The nation has now reached the crossroads. In a few short days it will only require a gentle nudge and the government will fall! The old man in the palace has simply run out of time and he appears to be the only one in the country that does not know it.’

General Udijana slightly nodded. ‘That’s how I and many others, both in Cabinet and the Army see the situation. It is time for the President to step aside. Indonesia demands a younger, stronger leader to take his place. We need a leader who can rebuild the nation by reforming it from within while still able to preserve the fundamentals that make Indonesia what it is today.’

Rundi sat there with bated breath waiting for the name but in typical Javanese fashion the name never came but it wasn’t hard to draw a conclusion after considering who had just been sitting in this very chair.

General Udijana was near the end of his military career and had been looking at a Cabinet position for some time to give him an opportunity to exploit what so many others had done in the past. Exploit the nation to his own advantage that way he could live comfortably in retirement, in a style, which so far had eluded him.

‘You don’t need to be a clairvoyant to see the future. It’s bleak. Riots are becoming more frequent. The economy is collapsing while Suharto is struggling to retain power. His only concern is to protect his business interests and that of his family and cronies. Indonesia will be dragged to its knees and if this situation isn’t turned around soon we may see Civil War.

We both know Suharto has been told his time has come! His reply to the army was to dismiss the messenger from the Army and we both know the General I am referring too.’

Rundi nodded. The General was a friend and that incident still left a bitter taste in his mouth.

‘I want Suharto’s resignation within the next thirty days! To do that we need a focal point! Something that the opposition parties can use as a springboard to propel the opposition and student bodies to bring down the current government!

What we need are martyrs! Preferably innocent people, students would be good, that would enrage the orang kecil (small people) to come out on the streets, once that happens Suharto is finished.’

General Rundi wasn’t a squeamish man. He had given the orders to take life on a number of occasions without the slightest hint of remorse but he had never considered the idea of killing innocents and, somehow the idea seemed to catch in his throat. ‘What are your orders Sir’ is all he could bring himself to say.

General Udijana could see Rundi wouldn’t act unless he received a direct order in the end he ordered. ‘Achmad I know this will be hard and is in defiance to everything you believe in, but as a soldier you must understand. Suharto must be brought down, and quickly! Only by doing this can we save further suffering and begin to rebuild the government and the nation.

At this very moment a protest has begun at the Trisakti University campus, which will continue for most of the day. The Army and police have been placed in the street outside the campus. At some point of time the protesters will inevitably confront the soldiers in a peaceful standoff. Your orders are to place snipers on the rooftops of the adjacent buildings and when the time is right shoot a number of the University Students. At the same time I want one of your snipers firing rubbers bullets at the TNI soldiers. It is essential that the soldiers lose control! The dead students will be seen as martyrs. I also need plenty of film of TNI soldiers brutalising these young people and particularly the young innocents. The world and the orang kecil (small people) must blame Suharto. This will become the pivotal point which will unite all the opposition parties to act as one.’

Rundi knew if this ever got out no matter who came out on top he would be finished and he had no intention of being made a scapegoat at some future time. ‘Sir if this ever comes out we’ll be court marshalled!’

‘That’s why it must never come out! Use a small loyal team without any insignias’ commanded General Udijana.

Major General Rundi still didn’t move from his chair so his commander continued ‘Once the task is completed I want your men out of the area. Others will arrive to continue the escalation through the night.’ Still sensing Rundi’s reluctance General Udijana growled ‘you have your orders!’

Rundi saw his commander’s demeanour and jumped to his feet and saluted before he gave him one last glare as if pleading with him, telling him this was not a good idea.
