Aurora could see hundreds of tiny golden speckles falling around her and lighting up the dark sea. She looked up and her heart sang. Above her, an ancient turtle with a golden shell was gliding through the water, leaving a trail of pure wild magic.

“Wheeeeee!” shrieked Aurora, Lyla, Harper and Millie as they whizzed down the spiral slide, holding each other’s tail fins. They bounced on to the giant sponge at the bottom, giggling while their dolphins clapped their flippers.
“That was fun!” said Harper, flicking herself upright. She looked round the playpark, one of Lilac Star dorm’s favourite places to hang out at Mermaid Academy. “What shall we go on next? The spinning clamshells or the twirling turtle?”
“Turtle,” decided Millie. The four mermaids from Moon Pearl dorm had just swum away from 2it and were heading over to the octopus bars. “I’m going to sit here for a while,” said Aurora. “I want to finish the story I’m reading.” She rummaged around in her bag for her book, Danger in the Deep.
“Do you have to read now?” groaned Harper. “Pleeeeease come and play!” begged Splash, Harper’s dolphin. 3
Aurora shook her head. “I’ve only got a couple of chapters left and I want to find out what happens. It’s really exciting.”
“More exciting than playing with us?” Harper said, looking as if she couldn’t believe it.
“Much more!” said Aurora with a grin. “The two mermaids in it are trying to escape from a sea monster’s lair in the deep sea. It’s really dark so they have to find some moonglow algae to make a lantern with. Without a lantern, they won’t know where the monster is or be able to find their way out—”
She broke off as she heard a long, low note echoing around the school grounds. “That’s the conch,” she said in surprise. “Why’s it being blown? It’s not dinner time yet.”
Around the playpark she could see other first-year students stopping and looking puzzled too. The conch was usually only sounded to call 4everyone to assembly, for meals or at bedtime.
“What’s going on?” called Isla from Moon Pearl.
Two older students zoomed into the playpark. “Everyone’s got to go to the Singing Circle. Right now!”
“Why?” asked Millie.
“Dr Oceania is holding an emergency assembly. She’ll tell you more then. Hurry, please.” The older students swam off.
Aurora’s heart raced as she shoved her book back into her bag. Dr Oceania, the academy’s headteacher, had never called an emergency assembly before.
“I wonder what’s happened,” said Lyla.
“It must be something bad!” said Harper, her eyes wide.
Aurora felt sick. “I hope it’s not the Mal Mer causing trouble again.” 5
The Mal Mer were a wicked mer clan who had plundered their own ocean of everything that was beautiful and were now stealing from other oceans. They were very powerful and could use mind control to force sea creatures to obey them. Aurora and her friends had thwarted the Mal Mer’s evil schemes three times now. But Aurora hadn’t enjoyed their escapades – she much preferred reading about exciting adventures to having them!
“Maybe it’s something to do with Spiky Hair and Silver Cloak,” said Millie with a shiver.
Spiky Hair and Silver Cloak were the nicknames Aurora and the others had given to two particularly horrible Mal Mer. A few days ago, Spiky Hair and Silver Cloak had kidnapped the four Lilac Star mermaids and their dolphins. They had thrown them into a dungeon and tried to turn the dolphins into their servants. 6
“It can’t be them. When we escaped from their mansion, we left them locked in a cage,” said Lyla.
“And in assembly this morning, Dr Oceania told us that the Mer Guard had gone there and arrested them. They’ve been questioned and now they’re being taken to an extra-secure prison,” said Harper. “We’re celebrating the seas being safe again with a feast tomorrow night.”
“So it’s probably nothing to do with those two Mal Mer, but something’s going on,” said Millie. “Let’s find out!”
They grabbed their dolphins’ fins and zoomed back through the sparkling turquoise water.
It didn’t take long to reach the school. The majestic coral buildings of the academy had been built around the Singing Circle, a circular courtyard that was dotted with stone benches, marble statues and sea fans. A giant harp stood on a pedestal in the centre. Usually the Singing 7Circle was filled with students chatting, hanging out or playing tag, but now everyone was in small groups, talking anxiously.
“Arlo! Seb!” Harper called, spotting two boys from Sea Jet dorm. “What’s going on?”
“Haven’t you heard?” Arlo said, swimming over with Seb. “Those two Mal Mer who captured you have escaped from the guards!” 8
“No one knows where they’ve gone,” said Seb.
“The feast has been cancelled!” said Arlo.
Aurora and the rest of Lilac Star exchanged horrified looks. Spiky Hair and Silver Cloak had escaped! This wasn’t good news at all!
Two older students, Marianne and Tinto, pulled back the seaweed curtain that covered the entrance to the Grand Cavern.
“Hurry, please. Dr Oceania is waiting!” called Marianne.
Lilac Star hugged their dolphins goodbye.
Aurora’s thoughts were whirling. “Be really careful when you go to the surface,” she said anxiously to Jewel. “Stay close to the other dolphins and don’t go too far from the academy.”
“We’ll be fine,” said Jewel confidently. “Those two Mal Mer wouldn’t dare to come near the school.” 10
Aurora didn’t know how she could seem so unbothered. “Jewel, please take this seriously,” she begged. “You know how dangerous Silver Cloak and Spiky Hair are. Who knows what they could have planned now they’ve escaped.” Her imagination was filling her mind with terrifying thoughts. “When we were in the dungeon, we heard them say they were going to wake a sleeping beast. What if they’re planning on doing something terrible now they’re free?”
Jewel waved away her concerns with a flipper. “I bet they’ll be far too busy staying away from the guards to start anything.”
“Hurry up, everyone!” shouted Marianna.
Jewel kissed Aurora on the nose. “See you later,” she said. “And don’t worry. 11The guards will catch those Mal Mer and everything will be OK.”
Aurora watched her swim away with the other dolphins. She wished she could be as relaxed as Jewel but knowing those two scary Mal Mer were on the loose was sending shivers down her scales.
I hope Jewel’s right and the guards catch them soon, she thought, following the others into the Grand Cavern.
The huge cave where they had assemblies was lit by sconces of green mermaid fire. In the centre was a platform with a large chair, and high above it twirled the Magical Globe marked with every sea, ocean, loch and lagoon in the world.
In normal assemblies a shoal of diva fish would sing and then Dr Oceania would come out from her room at the back of the Grand Cavern, but now there was no singing and Dr Oceania was already seated on her chair. She clapped her 12
