Serena looked at her friends and, seeing the excitement on their faces, she knew they were all thinking the same thing. Could this kelp forest be the place that the Sphinx had told them about?

CHAPTER ONE

“I’m having the best time at Mermaid Academy. It’s brilliant here, isn’t it?” Serena said to Opal.

Opal, a pretty dolphin with red, orange and blue squiggles on her back and tail, waggled her fins. “It de-fin-itely is!”

Serena giggled and twirled round in the warm turquoise water, making her brown hair that was streaked with purple and red swirl around her shoulders. “It’s so different from where my clan lives. The water there is much colder and—” She broke off, spotting a group of sparkly creatures chasing each other. “Look at those cute squid!” 2

“I love playing tag with my sisters,” said Opal wistfully, as she watched the squid. Her eyes brightened. “Maybe we could play it now?”

“Yes, let’s! Catch me if you can!” whooped Serena. With a flick of her tail, she charged away with Opal racing after her.

It was their second day at Mermaid Academy and they were taking part in a treasure hunt to help the mermaids and dolphins get to know each other and find their way around the school grounds. 3

Dr Oceania, the academy’s headteacher, had explained at the welcome assembly the day before that there wouldn’t be any lessons until after the Pairing Ceremony. “Work in your dorm groups and use the treasure hunt as a chance to decide which dolphin you’re going to pair with.” She’d smiled at the excited students. “There will be a prize for the winning team and sea-star points for every team that finds every object on the list.”

Serena couldn’t wait to pair with a dolphin who she would hopefully bond with. Together, they would spend their years at Mermaid Academy learning to be guardians of the wonderful oceans they lived in.

After the assembly, the students and dolphins had milled around. Serena had been drawn to Opal straightaway, noticing how the lively dolphin never seemed to stay still. Serena always had lots of ideas bubbling in her head and she loved to 4race about, so Opal seemed like a perfect match! Luckily, Opal seemed to feel the same. She had hardly left Serena’s side and Serena really hoped they would choose each other for the Pairing Ceremony.

Serena’s friends in Emerald Wave dorm had also found dolphins they wanted to get to know better. Naomi had made friends with a shy dolphin called Shadow, Amelia with a cheerful, easy-going dolphin called Breeze and Daphne with a confident dolphin called Glitter. Serena liked all their dolphins but she was sure Opal was the best!

Serena zigzagged through the water, with Opal close behind. Swerving to the left, she shot round a giant sea fan, almost colliding with Naomi and Shadow coming the other way.

“Whoa!” gasped Naomi. “Watch out!” 5

“Sorry! We’re playing tag!” cried Serena, racing round her. “Join in if you want.”

Naomi blinked. “Tag?” she said in surprise. “But what about the treasure hunt?”

“Oh, yes.” Serena pulled up, remembering.

“Got you!” Opal whistled, bumping Serena with her nose. “Do you want to play?” she asked Shadow.

He shyly shook his head.

Naomi looked puzzled. “At lunchtime we said we’d try really hard to find the last few things on the list so why are you two playing tag? We’ve already collected a red cowrie shell, some rose kelp, a blade of sea grass, an old hermit crab shell and a sea poppy but there are still things to get.”

“Sorry, we forgot,” said Serena.

“We’ve been having too much fun exploring!” Opal pushed her nose under Serena’s arm and 6looked up at Naomi. “What do we have left to find?”

“A sparkly green stone, a book or scroll with a map, and a sprig of Knitbone lavender.” Naomi looked around. “Oh, good, here come the others.”

Amelia, Daphne and their dolphins came swimming round the coral.

“We’ve been having a great time!” said Daphne, her eyes shining. “We saw two turtles playing tag, and Amelia made up a song about them. Breeze joined in and sang along. The turtles loved it and 7tapped their flippers in time with the music! Amelia’s a brilliant musician.”

Amelia blushed. “Thanks, but I’m not that good.”

“You are,” insisted Daphne. “Why don’t you and Breeze sing for everyone now, Amelia?”

“Ooh, yes, let’s!” said Breeze eagerly.

“But we haven’t finished the treasure hunt,” protested Naomi. “That’s what we’re supposed to be doing.”

Serena swapped guilty looks with Daphne and Amelia, relieved that she wasn’t the only one who’d got distracted.

“Of course,” Daphne said quickly. “What do we need to find next?”

Naomi’s face relaxed. “A sparkly green stone and—”

“Opal and I saw some stones like that,” Serena interrupted. “Where were they, Opal?” 8

“I know! I know!” Opal burst out excitedly. “They were in the coral clearing with the porpoise statue.”

“If you saw one, why didn’t you pick it up?” asked Naomi in astonishment.

“Sorry!” shouted Serena, swimming away. “We’ll get one now!”

Opal raced up beside her and pushed her back fin into Serena’s hands. “If you hold on to me, we can link our magic. Then we’ll be able to go extra fast.”

Excitement surged through Serena. Opal must really like her to want to link their energies so soon! Ihopethismeansshewillwanttopairwithmeat the ceremony tonight, she thought as they zoomed away.

Speeding through the clear water, they swerved round pink and orange bubble corals and scattered a shoal of tiny bright fish before 9halting in a clearing where a beautiful marble statue of a porpoise was lying on its side. The four merboys from Moon Glass dorm and an older mermaid called Mallory were gathered round it.

Wondering what was going on, Serena asked, “What happened?”

“We were swimming past the statue and it fell over,” said Mallory. She was in the third year but she was new to the school too. She’d been travelling with her parents, who mapped the oceans, and she had been homeschooled until now. Dr Oceania had told her to join the treasure hunt so she could find a dolphin to partner with and get to know the school. “It can’t have been secured properly. It’s lucky that no one was hurt.” 10

“Only because I pushed Jaxon out of the way in time,” said Riva, a boy with long black hair streaked with green.

“It missed me by a catfish’s whisker!” said Jaxon, looking shaken.

“Should we try and stand it up again?” Tobias asked. “Or do we tell the teachers?”

“What if they think it was our fault and tell us off?” said Harry doubtfully.

As they argued, Opal burst out from behind a statue of a merman and a turtle. A green sparkly stone was balanced on her nose. She tossed it to Serena. “Look! I found one!”

“Yay!” cried Serena, catching it. “Just what we need.” Hearing voices, she turned and saw Naomi, 11Amelia and Daphne arriving with the dolphins.

“You swam so fast,” Daphne called. “Did you two link—”

“We’ve got a green stone,” Serena interrupted. “Now we just need the knit-something and a map.”

“We’ll find Knitbone lavender in the kitchen gardens,” said Glitter confidently. “I swam through it earlier and every kind of medicinal herb grows there.”

“Last one there’s a squidgy sea slug!” cried Serena, grabbing Opal’s fin again.

“Serena, wait,” Naomi shouted. “We…”

But Serena and Opal were already whizzing away.
