JACOB PORTMAN COMES FROM A RICH FAMILY, BUT THIS fact is not sufficient to help him lead a satisfactory life. He continues in his humdrum existence, enlivened only by his grandfather’s stories and knowing that the only thing the future holds for him is to be a partner in the family business. However, when his grandfather dies, things suddenly change for Jacob. Battling with grief, Jacob is unable to believe the normal explanation for his grandfather’s death. He gets nightmares about strange monsters and has to go to a therapist.
His grandfather’s dying words give Jacob a place to start seeking healing. But things don’t quite work that way and all he finds is evidence that his grandfather’s tall stories might just have been true. When he comes across a letter written to him by a Miss Peregrine from Wales, he is determined to go there and meet with her, and thus discover the secrets of his grandfather’s childhood and traumatic past. It took a while to convince his parents, but when his ornithologist father realized that there rare birds that inhabited the island, he was more than happy to take Jacob.
Once in Wales, Jacob sets out to discover the house where his grandfather took refuge. It was hidden deep in the woods, and he found it badly bombed out and in a state of disrepair. He felt strangely drawn to the place even though he felt scared to be there. But when he saw a young girl calling out his grandfather’s name, he knew he had to discover more. Jacob discovers a different time and place where his grandfather’s friends are young again.
