THE GALAXY LIBRARY
After a light dinner, having read his book for almost two hours and drinking his milk with honey, Ülgen was in his cozy bed at around 10 pm. He was comfortably asleep under his snow-white blanket. When he woke up, it was 4 am. The Denizli Rooster loudly crowed three times, then an absolute silence fell.
Ülgen sat on the red Tibetan carpet in the middle of the living room, he turned south and dove deep into thoughts. He, as always, desired to know the unknown, to see the unseen. There was so much he did not know; he almost felt the famous quote “I know that I know nothing” by Socrates slip out of his mouth. How could he possibly know what he does not know, how could he reachtheknowledge? He intended to dig deep and think these thoroughly. Opening the window, he took ten deep breaths, and started to focus on his thoughts while meditating. He stood in the middle of the carpet again, with his feet slightly apart. The room was in semi-darkness. Facing forward with his eyes open, he thought:
“How could one discover the secrets of the universe? Could a human being seek and consume all the knowledge in one lifetime?” As he was deep in thoughts, he noticed a tunnel appearing on his right side. The tunnel was approximately three meters wide and four meters tall with its walls, floor, and ceiling seeming to be quite neat. The floor was adorned with glazed tiles, there were tulip shaped mosaics on the walls, and the ceiling was embellished with stars from the skies. Ülgen was one step away from entering the tunnel. In hesitation, he thought “Should I go in?” for a moment, but then he decided that he should go in no matter what.
He was in the tunnel now, where he could feel the magnetic force pulling him in. He felt as if he was moving forward in this bright tunnel bedecked with tiles and mosaics without moving a muscle. He could see nothing when he looked back, he was being pulled into the tunnel faster and faster. The journey went on for a while until it finally came to an end. There was a vast area on the left side of the tunnel. The area was covered in green grass, on which colourful flowers bloomed on trees, eccentric fruit trees that he had never seen grew, and vineyards flourished. The tunnel appeared to end here.
There was a wide square at where he believed to be the end of the tunnel. A neat road was laid in front of him. The road led him to an immense building that has blue walls and a blue roof. It said ‘Galaxy Library’ on the door. “Galaxy Library!” he murmured. As he headed for the entrance, a young man in his thirties, who wore what Ürgen believed to be a librarian uniform approached him.
“Welcome, Ülgen! We have been expecting you. I hope it was not a boring journey.”
Ülgen was baffled. “You have been expecting me? How did you know I would come here?” he asked with a slight hesitation.
“We have been informed of your arrival,” said the man “follow me, please!”
The automatic gate opened, Ürgen followed the librarian inside. They stood in front of a door that was labelled ‘Library Administration Department.’ When they entered the room, the Administrative Director welcomed them.
“Welcome Ülgen, it is an honour to have you in our library! You must be exhausted after that long journey. Please, have a seat!”
“Frankly, I am not tired at all. I am full of energy. You see, I have been in love with books ever since I was little. When I am overwhelmed, angry, or tired, I turn to books and they sweep away all the negativity, filling me up with energy. In a library like this, one can only feel energetic. I feel so lucky! I am bursting with happiness! Only I could appreciate being at the Galaxy Library. Thank you!” said Ülgen and took the seat.
“I have been looking forward for your arrival. In this library, you will find all the wisdom of the Milky Way. In addition, you will find information about the other galaxies and universes. You will take this knowledge to the Earth and improve the civilization there to be an A-class civilization. In that sense, never forget that you are the chosen one.” said the Director, then he pushed a button on the keyboard-like device in front of him.
Soon a humanoid robot appeared, holding two glasses of elixir on a golden plate. “This is the finest elixir in the entire galaxy. It amplifies the understanding capacity,” said the Director.
“I don’t know whether I could memorize all this knowledge. Do you think I am capable of this?”
“You will see, it will not be difficult at all. Do not think of this place as a library. Think of it as an arcade saloon and you are a player. Library is an arcade saloon, books are games, and we are simply other players. We will play a game of learning for many years.”
As they sipped the delicious elixirs, the Director continued:
“You come from a strange planet; thus, we will need to cleanse you. You must bathe yourself. However, you will not use water, but use light instead.
Ülgen was puzzled. He got up and said:
“Bathing without water? I can’t believe it. I’ll bathe in light?”
“Calm down mister! It is nothing to be surprized about.
“We cleanse in light here. The light clears our bodies of germs. It gives us energy and keeps negative thoughts away. Inconvenience does not worry us. We don’t get angry or hold grudge. We can never think evil, ever. You will enjoy bathing in light, wait and see. It will improve you spiritually, broaden the capacity of your memory, amplify your comprehension, and increase your immunity. Bathing in light is beneficial from every aspect.”
“You cure sickness using light?”
“Of course we do! Every disease, mental or physical, can be cured using light. Isn’t it obvious? You must bathe in light at once, before you get to work. And, you should abandon your Earth clothes. You will now wear the clothes of this library.
The Director hit a button and an employee came in to take Ülgen to bathe in light. Ülgen entered the emerald-green room and light beams brushed against his body, his organs, even his DNA. After the bath, he was given new clothes and taken to the Director. They sat across each other at the table and drank one more glass of the Galaxy Elixir.
“Ülgen now you will go under one more crucial operation,” said the Director, as Ülgen listened restlessly for his next words with his eyes wide open. “we will put memory cards between your skull and scalp so you can store all the data of the galaxy. It is a rather simple operation. The memory cards will store all the information, which will not be deleted without your will. You will be able to access this data whenever you desire. Now, they will take you to the laboratory where the operation will be done. We will meet again, once the operation is done.”
Ülgen was taken to a room that is both a laboratory and an operating room. Three specialists in white scrubs were waiting for him. They laid him on the table and placed the memory cards under his scalp. Then, they wired golden strings between the cards and his fingers and hid the strings under his skin. Thus, when Ülgen touched the books, the information would be transferred to the memory cards.
After this procedure, Ülgen felt weightless, he felt as if he was free of gravity. His comprehension was so amplified that he could grasp anything to the smallest detail.
Ülgen was taken to the Director again.
“Now you are an employee of the Galaxy Library. Here, you will be one with the books, and with us. You will find everything you need. Good luck, Ülgen!”
They took Ülgen to a well-guarded place where the books were kept. They sorted the planets -such as the planet Earth that didn’t make it to the A-class level yet- into groups labelled A class, B class, C class etc. and collected information about them, then the data was stored here.
In the meantime, an attendant started to inform him about the process.
“Ülgen, you will begin your work from the planets that haven’t reached the A-class level yet” the attendant said.
Ülgen had assumed that there were no other planets that haven’t reached the A-class level other than planet Earth. However, there were thousands of planets in this group. There were so many civilizations at different levels, Ülgen’s thoughts were all over the place. He collected his thoughts and put himself together. He started working on the data about planet Earth. There was so much about the Earth that he was ignorant of!
“I had been aware of my ignorance and now I understand how right I was to think that Socrates’ words apply to me,” Ülgen thought.
When he put his fingers on the books that contain information about almost every subject, all the data was transferred to the memory cards.
During his breaks from studying, Ülgen would run, exercise, and play golf at the library’s vast green area filled with many trees and covered in grass. He would swim in the warm and crystal-clear stream that ran through the library’s premises. Nothing was difficult here. How fun it was to touch the books and transfer the data to the memory cards! He lost the sense of time. One day, as he was studying at the library, an employee approached and said: “Ülgen, the Director expects you in his office.”
“I will come right away.”
The Director welcomed Ülgen, holding two glasses of Galaxy Elixir in his hands.
“I am pleased to see you Ülgen. It has been a while since we last met. Here, let’s have a little chat.” Ülgen looked at him, anxious to learn whether something is wrong. The Director realised he was troubled,
“Ülgen, there is nothing to worry about. Do you know how long you have been here?”
Ülgen nodded his head stating he did not know. The Director proceeded;
“Let me tell you. One hundred and eighty years have passed on Earth. You will finish transferring all the data in this library to your memory cards in approximately ten days. I will be in another galaxy when you leave here. I am leaving today. This is why I summoned you.”
They continued to sip the Galaxy Elixir. As Ülgen was returning to the library, the Director got in the car waiting for him in front of the library.
When Ülgen returned to the Earth, he found the planet much more miserable than he anticipated. Half of the population had perished due to the hunger, the drought, and the extreme heat. More than half of the species on earth had disappeared. Authorities had not been able to come up with any solution. Thus, Ülgen requested that the United Nations Secretary-General would assemble a plenary session and his request was accepted.
THE PICNIC
It was a sweltry Sunday in July. Çetin had gotten up before the sunrise, opened the windows, and watered the flowers in the garden. Meanwhile, his wife Fadime was making breakfast.
“It has been a long time since we had a picnic. How lovely it would be if we had a picnic in a chilly corner today?” said Fadime.
Çetin ignored the offer. It was as if she said nothing to him. She increased her voice,
“Çetin, I said let’s have a picnic this Sunday! I am tired of doing the same things every day, being at the same place. Why don’t we get some fresh air?”
“I heard you, honey. I did...”
