I sat with my best friend, Emma, at the dining room table. We were cramming for finals. I’d turned nineteen a month earlier and if I could just pass chemistry, I’d graduate next month. Emma was good at math and science, so she swore she’d get me through it. Mrs. Robbins had been the one to suggest I spend the weekend with them and get as much studying in as possible. She was now in the living room watching television while Mr. Robbins was out playing golf.

I preferred studying at Emma’s house anyway. Her parents were much more laid back than mine. They never complained if we played our music too loud, or had boys over, even when it was clear we were doing more flirting than studying. There was another reason I hung around the Robbins’s home as much as possible, too, but Emma didn’t know anything about that.

The Robbins had invited my family to their anniversary celebration a couple of weeks ago. It was a huge party with five star catering. When it came time for the couple to make a speech, Mrs. Robbins was nowhere to be seen. Mr. Robbins asked us girls to help look for her. Emma suggested I run upstairs to check the bedroom, thinking her mother was probably freshening up her makeup or something. Mrs. Robbins was a beautiful woman who always looked her best.
