About the Author
Truth’s shining light guides me in my choices and decisions; the revelation of your Word makes my pathway clear.
Psalm 119:105
Father, as I enter into a new year, I come before you eager to walk in your ways. Illuminate my path, guide my steps, and help me to see all the good things you have for me. My greatest desire is to follow after you with a pure heart, a sound mind, and a renewed spirit. I want to chew on and savor your life-giving words day in and day out so that I might not stumble in the mists of confusion and worry.
Thank you for the gift of Scripture and the truth it brings to my life. It’s like a nourishing meal that gives me strength for whatever lies ahead. It satisfies, yet I’m always hungry for more. Thank you for revealing your good heart to me in the pages of your Word. I trust you, and I love you. Help me to be wise, not as the world understands wisdom but as heaven has revealed it. May the choices and decisions I make bring honor to you.
Do you need wisdom in a certain area of your life? Go to God’s Word and seek it there.
I will worship you, YAHWEH, with extended hands as my whole heart erupts with praise! I will tell everyone everywhere about your wonderful works!
Psalm 9:1
I was created to be an instrument of praise, and I am here today to make much of you, Lord. I will lift my voice when I’m gathered with my brothers and sisters, and I will sing when I’m all alone. Either way, I worship before an audience of One. I am not ashamed to proclaim your goodness, your kindness, your strength, and your mercy. You are worthy of every bit of praise I can give.
You have saved me and delivered me. You have given me a new life, a new identity, and a place in your family. How could I not worship you? My praise is simply the overflow of the love you have poured into me—and I want others to know how you have transformed my life. As an act of obedient worship, I will tell them about your goodness, how you sent Jesus to take away my sins and make me whole, and that you can do the same for anyone who comes to you in faith. I live to worship you.
What can you praise God for today? Draw near and tell him how much you love him.
Let everyone thank God, for he is good, and he is easy to please! His tender love for us continues on forever!
Psalm 136:1
Heavenly Father, I could spend the rest of my life writing thank-you notes to you, and it wouldn’t be enough. There is no end to your kindness. Every gift you give us is “good and perfect” (James [Jacob] 1:17). Everywhere I turn, I see reminders of your thoughtfulness and your provision, your mercy and your love. The morning sun peeking over the horizon reminds me of your faithfulness. The sweet scent in the air after a rainstorm proclaims your invitation to refresh all who come to you (Acts 3:19).
Your love goes on and on. Like a river during a flood, your love cannot be contained; it cannot be pushed back. It knows no boundaries. You loved me while I was living only to please myself. You came and rescued me even though I had done nothing to attract your mercy. I was dead, and you breathed life into me. Thank you, Lord, for making me new, for giving me your Spirit, and for setting me free from sin.
Where do you see God’s love showing up in your life? Consider both the big and the little things.
The pain never let up, for your hand of conviction was heavy on my heart. My strength was sapped, my inner life dried up like a spiritual drought within my soul.
Psalm 32:4
My secret sins were eating away at my soul. To others, I looked healthy and stable, but deep within, I was falling apart. You saw, good Lord, and you applied pressure to my wound. The pain was terrible, but through it, I came to realize my need for repentance and change. I needed the conviction of your Holy Spirit. Otherwise, I would have continued on sinning, feeding my flesh and living a double life. Thank you, Father, for your healing touch.
Even now, Lord, I recognize that something offensive to you may still be festering in my heart. Reveal to me anything in me that is not of you, anything that does not reflect a life of faith, hope, and love. Then I will confess it, and as you promised, you will forgive me and cleanse me (1 John 1:9). I am ready to receive correction, and I welcome your conviction. Thank you, heavenly Father, for your mercy. Thank you, Lord, for tending to my soul.
Has the Lord been convicting you of anything recently? Go to him with open hands and an open heart.
Help us to remember that our days are numbered, and help us to interpret our lives correctly. Set your wisdom deeply in our hearts so that we may accept your correction.
Psalm 90:12
My Lord and my Creator, every day you give to me is a gift, precious and wonderful to behold. You are the author of life, the one who knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10), and the one who guards me like a faithful shepherd (Psalm 23:4). Help me to remember that you have set me in this time and place for your purposes. I am not here by chance. No day or hour is meaningless; each moment is a new opportunity to fellowship with you and to serve you in this world.
Lord, this life is so brief compared to eternity. Help me to make it count for your kingdom and for your glory. Grant me wisdom and understanding for these times. Give me eyes to see the world as you see it, a heart to love people as you love them, and the strength to stand firm when others kneel before the gods of this age. I commit my life to you anew, heavenly Father.
How can you seize this day for Jesus? Never forget just how precious your life is.
From the four corners of the earth, the peoples of the world will remember and return to YAHWEH. Every nation will come and worship him.
Psalm 22:27
Jesus, you are my King! You are the Lamb who is worthy, the Lamb who was slain for me and my sins. Though I look around at the world today and see war and hardship, pain and suffering, I know that evil will not have the final word. Your kingdom has invaded this earth, and one day it will be said, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our God and of his Anointed One!” (Revelation 11:15). You will bring total peace, complete healing, and an end to death and suffering, once and for all. My heart beats faster just thinking about it.
Lord, I will not wait until then to give you my praise. I will worship you here and now, in the calm and in the storm. You have brought me into your kingdom, and I am your servant. It is my privilege to tell everyone I meet about your goodness and your grace so that one day people from every nation will join in the celebration of praise.
Whom can you share the gospel with this week? Ask God to go before you and prepare fertile soil.
What delight comes to the one who follows God’s ways! He won’t walk in step with the wicked, nor share the sinner’s way, nor be found sitting in the scorner’s seat.
Psalm 1:1
Almighty God, you have set before each of us the way of life and the way of death, and you freely give wisdom to all who ask for it (James [Jacob] 1:5). I choose your way, Lord—the narrow gate that Jesus talked about (Matthew 7:13). I want to walk according to your commands, in step with your Spirit, and in cooperation with your plans for my life. Guide my steps and keep me. I reject the broad path of self-fulfillment, the way of worldliness and status, the road of sinful pleasures. Your way is always best, Father.
Though others may mock me and tell me I’m somehow “missing out,” I know your path is filled with treasures of blessing and joy. The good life is a life lived with you. Therefore, I will memorize your Word and store it deep in my heart, and I will seek to know you every day of my life. I want more of you, Lord. You are always faithful.
What does it look like to choose the way of the Lord in your life? Step out in faith.
He’s the awe-inspiring God, great and glorious in power! We’ve never seen anything like him! Mighty in miracles, you cause your enemies to tremble.
Psalm 66:3
There is nothing too hard for you, Father. In your presence, impassable mountains move aside, thrashing storms cease, wild seas part. There is nothing you can’t do. How, then, can I be afraid? What can life throw at me that you can’t conquer? I know all this in my head, but in my heart, I sometimes tremble at the mountains, cower in the storms, and fall faint at the sea stretched out before me. “I do believe, Lord; help my little faith!” (Mark 9:24).
With you, there is no shortage of miracles; there is no limit to your power. It is in your heart to heal the sick and to reclaim what the devil has stolen from your children. You are a good, good Father, and you provide everything your sons and daughters need. I am thankful for all the ways you have provided for me. So today, I bring to you my needs and spread them out before you, even those that seem impossible to meet.
Is there any problem in your life you’ve written off as too difficult? Bring it to God today.
If God’s grace doesn’t help the builders, they will labor in vain to build a house.
If God’s mercy doesn’t protect the city, all the sentries will circle it in vain.
Psalm 127:1
Gracious God, I confess my pride to you. I am quick to complete my tasks in my own strength, forgetting to acknowledge you in all that I do. Too often, prayer is a last resort rather than a first priority. The busyness of life dictates my pace rather than the rhythms you have set out for me in your Word. The truth is that I can accomplish more by leaning on you than I can by going out on my own. I will wear myself out if I carry the burdens of life on my own shoulders. I need you, Lord!
I am reminded of this command from the New Testament, penned by the apostle Peter: “Pour out all your worries and stress upon him and leave them there, for he always tenderly cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). What a grace-filled invitation and life-giving truth! Here and now, Lord, I place my to-do list and my anxieties in your capable hands. I trust you to sustain me.
What tasks do you need to give over to God? Do it now.
All I need to do is to call on you, YAHWEH, the praiseworthy God. When I do, I’m safe and sound in you—delivered from my foes!
Psalm 18:3
Lord, no matter where I go or what situation I find myself in, you are not far off. You are never too busy for me, never disinterested, never too tired to listen to my prayers. Even if every person I know were out to get me, I could rest safely in your arms. You are my deliverer and my comforter, my rock and my strong tower. You have made me this wonderful promise: “I will never leave you, never! And I will not loosen my grip on your life!” (Hebrews 13:5).
Therefore, I will call on you when trouble surrounds me, confident that you will answer me. I will take time—morning, noon, and night—to be still in your presence. I will not fear what any human being can do to me. Instead, I will live boldly for your kingdom, following the promptings of your Spirit and chasing after your good heart with every fiber of my being. May my life be a song of praise to you, my gracious King.
How does it make you feel to know that God is always with you?
“I will reveal the eternal purpose of God. For he has decreed over me, ‘You are my favored Son. And as your Father I have crowned you as my King Eternal.’”
Psalm 2:7
You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords, Jesus. To you “all authority of the universe has been given” (Matthew 28:18). But you are not like the kings of this world. You were born in obscurity; a manger was your first crib. Your eternal beauty was hidden in ordinary human form, and you lived most of your life far from the public eye. When the time came to reveal yourself, you did not seek the centers of earthly power but instead healed and taught the common people. And though the miracles you performed spoke of your glory, the religious leaders hated you for them, and they condemned you to death.
Your crown was made of thorns, and they placed a robe on you in mockery. You were lifted high but only after they nailed you to a cross. You “did not come expecting to be served but to serve and give [your] life in exchange for the salvation of many” (Matthew 20:28). Therefore, I will serve you all the days of my life.
What can you do to serve King Jesus today?
So awesome are you, O YAHWEH, Lord God of Angel Armies! Where could we find anyone as glorious as you? Your faithfulness shines all around you!
Psalm 89:8
Lord God Almighty, you are a warrior, leading the armies of heaven into battle and reclaiming territory from the Enemy. The powers of darkness tremble at the mention of your name. Demons shriek, and foul spirits shudder when you come near. Their end is certain.
Why, then, should I be afraid when evil comes looking for me? Why should I run and hide when the forces of darkness want to do me harm? I will not give in to that great liar, fear. I will not succumb to the terror of anxiety either. As you did for Elisha’s servant, Lord, open my eyes so that I may see beyond the natural realm (2 Kings 6:17). There is a war waging all around me, but the battle belongs to you, my King! Therefore, I will join in the fight as one of your saints, arrayed with a full set of spiritual armor. Keep me in perfect peace and hold my feet steady, Lord, that I might stand firm.
How have you been affected by spiritual warfare? Ask God to give you wisdom for the battle.
How could I revoke my covenant of love that I promised David? For I have given him my word, my holy, irrevocable word. How could I lie to my loving servant David?
Psalm 89:34–35
Heavenly Father, you are the ultimate promise-keeper. Not one of your promises will fail. Not a single word that you have spoken will fall away before it accomplishes its good purposes (Isaiah 55:11). You are faithful to do all that you say, and you bring blessings to those who put their trust in you.
Thank you for the promises you have made to me in Christ. “All of God’s promises find their ‘yes’ of fulfillment in him. And as his ‘yes” and our ‘amen’ ascend to God, we bring him glory!” (2 Corinthians 1:20). Because of Jesus, my future is secure, and I can know that I will one day participate in his resurrection as I also participate in his sufferings (Philippians 3:10–11). Help me to lean on your promises, knowing that they are more secure than anything I will experience in this life. As it is written, “God will always be proven faithful and true to his word, while people are proven to be liars” (Romans 3:4).
What promises of God have been the most influential in the way you live?
Purify my conscience! Make this leper clean again! Wash me in your love until I am pure in heart.
Psalm 51:7
Lord, when I have sinned and my conscience testifies against me, I know there is only one place for me to turn. Though it is you I have sinned against, you whom I’ve offended and whose Spirit I have grieved, I will not hide my shame from you. I will not look for respite in addictions or vice, nor will I wallow in self-pity. I will run into your loving arms, Father. I will admit my failings and ask you to make me clean again.
Thank you for this wonderful promise in your word: “If we freely admit our sins when his light uncovers them, he will be faithful to forgive us every time. God is just to forgive us our sins because of Christ, and he will continue to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). It’s almost too good to be true that there is forgiveness available with no strings attached. As your son, I don’t need to earn your acceptance or spend a probationary period wearing my disgrace. I love you, Lord.
Is there anything unclean in your life that you need to confess to the Lord? Don’t wait; do it today.
God has rescued my soul from death’s fear and dried my eyes of many tears. He’s kept my feet firmly on his path.
Psalm 116:8
From the moment I was born into this cursed world, I have been slowly dying. Every one of us has. Death, they say, is inevitable. It comes for all of us. And yet, when your Son, Jesus, stepped out of the tomb on Resurrection Sunday morning, something shifted across the cosmos. Life conquered death; the curse began to unravel. Death no longer has the final say. It can no longer steal the joy of those who love you. Death is still our great enemy, but its days are numbered.
“Death is swallowed up by a triumphant victory! So death, tell me, where is your victory? Tell me death, where is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:54–55). I no longer fear death, for it has lost all its power. Now when I think about the end of this life, Lord, I think only of being with you and the endless road stretched out before me. A life more real than anything I’ve known so far awaits me. Father, keep my feet steady so that I might not wander from the path of life.
How is life different when you no longer fear death?
I know that you will welcome me into your house, for I am covered by your covenant of mercy and love. So I come to your sanctuary with deepest awe to bow in worship and adore you.
Psalm 5:7
What a privilege it is to rush into your presence as a young boy runs into the open arms of his waiting father. Though there are some who would like to place barriers of religion and legalism in the way, you have declared the path free and clear. To think that you have made me a part of your family! I did nothing to deserve your affection or your kindness, and yet you extend an open invitation for me to dine at the table of the King—not as a mere subject but as a beloved child.
I worship you, Lord, with the words that I sing but also with the life that I live. I praise you without the weight of duty or obligation. Rather, I bend low to lift up your name out of sheer gratitude. If I were given all eternity to praise you—and I have been—it would still not be enough time to declare your majesty. You are my all.
What can you do to enter into the presence of the Lord throughout each day?
You are passionate for righteousness, and you hate lawlessness. This is why God, your God, crowns you with bliss above your fellow kings.
Psalm 45:7
King Jesus, your heart beats for goodness and mercy, and your Spirit churns against disobedience. That is why you are the rightful King of Creation, the Prince of Peace, and the one who is worthy of all my praise. I was designed thoughtfully and intentionally to live in rhythm with the Father’s good heart. When I sin, I am choosing to reject that rhythm and to live out of step with God’s plans for me. Forgive me.
When you came to earth, you modeled a life of holy submission and unashamed surrender. You showed the whole world what it means to be truly human, to be a perfect image-bearer of the Father (Colossians 1:15). Jesus, I want to love the things you love and grieve over the things that bring you grief. Give me the perspective of heaven and align my heart with yours. May my life reflect the “oil of fervent joy, the very fragrance of heaven’s gladness” (Psalm 45:7) so that others might be drawn to you.
Do you love the things God loves? Do you hate the things God hates?
When you abide under the shadow of Shaddai, you are hidden in the strength of God Most High.
Psalm 91:1
Thank you, Lord, for not abandoning this world to destruction after humanity’s garden-rebellion. You have not turned your back on us or left us to struggle through this life on our own. You draw near to all who call on you, and you offer your strength as a shield in times of calamity. You are my hiding place. In you, I find rest. Before you, I lay down all of my burdens, my worries, and my insecurities. In the shadow of your wings, there is no fear or uncertainty, only your “wonderful peace that transcends human understanding” (Philippians 4:7).
Help me to walk not in self-confidence but in God-confidence, secure in the knowledge that your hand of protection is upon me at all times. If necessary, you will even send your angels to protect me; heaven’s warriors will deliver me from harm (Psalm 91:11). YAHWEH, I delight in you. No matter the trouble surrounding me at the moment, your presence is my greatest comfort. I love you.
Think back on your life. In what ways has God protected you from harm?
Because of you, I know the path of life, as I taste the fullness of joy in your presence. At your right side I experience divine pleasures forevermore!
Psalm 16:11
YAHWEH, there is no greater adventure than to follow after you. For too long the religious spirit of this age has told people that a life of devotion to you must be boring. But you invented joy and gladness and fun and celebration; those were your ideas. So how could the path to life that you’ve carved out ever be dull? How could knowing you be unexciting?
Long, long ago, you planned good works for me to do (Ephesians 2:10), so now I ask you to lead me into my destiny as I go about my days at home, at work, and in my community. Guide my steps to people who are in desperate need of your love. Enable me to minister to the unseen needs all around me. Give me opportunities to speak life and hope into situations of regret and despair. Empower me to be a vessel of healing. Thank you for the unspeakable joy that comes with knowing you.
How will you minister to others today?
God’s splendor is a tale that is told, written in the stars. Space itself speaks his story through the marvels of the heavens.
Psalm 19:1
When I look up at the night sky, I am filled with awe. Those brilliant specks of white light so far away speak of the grandeur of creation. You, Lord God, are limitless. You hold the entire universe in your hands, and yet you care for me with personal affection. I am reminded of what Jesus taught: “What about the seemingly minor issues of your life? Do they matter to God? Of course they do!” (Luke 12:6–7). My life and my needs are tiny in comparison to the vastness of time and space, but I am not beyond your notice. Thank you, Father.
Creation puts your creativity and meticulous design on display. You are a master artist and the storyteller supreme. Everywhere I look, I see glimpses of your brilliance, your beauty, and your glory; the natural world is only the masterpiece it is because it reflects who you are. I am humbled to join with the chorus of creation in praising you. You are worthy of all honor and blessing.
What does the natural world around you tell you about your heavenly Father?
The eyes of the Lord are upon even the weakest worshipers who love him—those who wait in hope and expectation for the strong, steady love of God.
Psalm 33:18
Heavenly Father, I confess that I don’t always worship you as I should. As the apostle Paul wrote, “Beloved friends, what should be our proper response to God’s marvelous mercies? To surrender yourselves to God to be his sacred, living sacrifices” (Romans 12:1). Yet there are times when I remove myself from the altar, times when I forget the grace you have shown me. Forgive me, Lord. I am not yet who I should be.
In my weakness, I wait upon you. I trust in your provision, and I rest in your love. Accept my worship, imperfect though it is, as a humble offering. Shape me into the man you have created me to be. Mold me into someone who looks a lot more like Jesus. Thank you for watching over me as I walk—and sometimes stumble—through this life. Your love constantly refreshes me. Your kindness energizes me and keeps me going. You are my only hope, Lord. I love you.
How have you grown more like Jesus since you started following him?
Many will see his miracles; they’ll stand in awe of God and fall in love with him!
Psalm 40:3
Lord, in your kingdom there is no lack. Food is multiplied, water is transformed into wine, and the oil doesn’t run out until the last empty jar is filled. You are a God of miracles. You heal the sick, open the eyes of the blind, and restore the legs of the lame. During his earthly ministry, Jesus didn’t turn away a single person in need of a miraculous healing. Instead, he met each need with the power of heaven. As a result, many put their faith in him. It’s no different today, Father. There are many people in need of a miracle, and your heart is to make those people whole, physically and spiritually.
I want to see miracles, Lord. I want to live a supernatural life, where the veil between heaven and earth is thin enough for me to see through to your glory. I want to be astonished by your works and fall down in worship as new faith wells up within me. Your miracles are too wonderful for words, but what I want more than anything is more of you.
Do you believe God still performs miracles? Ask him to increase your faith.
Why don’t you do something? You have the power to break in, so why would you hide your great power from us? Don’t hold back! Unleash your might and give them a final blow.
Psalm 74:11
Lord, as I read these words from Asaph, preserved forever in the Psalter, they resonate in my bones. There are times when I’ve asked, God, where are you? Why don’t you do something? When evil seems to prowl around this world unchallenged, when groups parade sin out in the streets for all to see, when people openly mock the things of God, I want you to show up and set things right. Righteous anger burns inside me, and zeal for your kingdom consumes me.
I know that, in the end, you will bring justice to this world. On that day, no wicked deed will go unpunished, and no evil thing will be permitted to fester. Father, help me to remember that whatever seems like a delay to my frail heart is actually a display of loving patience and designed to give more people the opportunity to repent (2 Peter 3:9). After all, I, too, once walked in darkness, and you were patient with me. Thank you, Lord.
How does knowing there’s a future day of judgment change how you view the world around you?
You lead me with your secret wisdom. And following you brings me into your brightness and glory!
Psalm 73:24
YAHWEH, the best decision I ever made was to follow you. As you speak into my life, I grow more and more homesick for heaven. But until the day when my faith becomes sight, I cherish your wisdom above all earthly knowledge, “for the ‘foolish’ things of God have proven to be wiser than human wisdom” (1 Corinthians 1:25). My perspective is limited, but yours is not. My best attempts at navigating this life on my own fall short. So I trust in you.
Your ways may seem strange, even ridiculous at times, but they are always life-giving. You use mustard-seed faith to change the world, the day of small things to usher in new eras of glory. You choose to work through the weak and the broken-down so that no one can deny your power is at work. Thank you, Lord, for sending your Holy Spirit to guide me into truth. His presence in my life is a taste of eternity, and I am hungry for more.
Are you living according to God’s secret wisdom? Ask him to speak wisdom from heaven into your life.
Every single moment you are thinking of me! How precious and wonderful to consider that you cherish me constantly in your every thought!
Psalm 139:17
Father God, you are the creator of all things. You spoke, and vast and diverse worlds spread across the universe. Moment by moment, you hold everything, both seen and unseen, together. And yet, there isn’t a fraction of a second when I am not in your thoughts. From the beginning of time, you have been pursuing human beings. You have never stopped desiring intimacy with your wayward sons and daughters.
Like the father in the parable of the prodigal son, you ran out to embrace me while I was still a long way off (Luke 15:20). You welcomed me into your family though I did nothing to deserve an ounce of your kindness. You set a table of blessings before me—more than I could have imagined. As wonderful as your blessings are, knowing you is the greatest treasure. The experience is worth far more than anything this world has to offer. And so, Lord, I come to you today simply to rest in your presence. You are all that I seek.
Do you have any burdens? Lay them down then spend time in God’s presence purely for the joy of it.
Give us a father’s help when we face our enemies. For to trust in any man is an empty hope.
Psalm 108:12
Father, when I think about all the times I’ve been abandoned and left all alone, I am heartbroken. It seems that everyone, at some point on this journey of life, has let me down. Even the most well-meaning people falter from time to time. The only one who is 100 percent trustworthy is you. You are the Father who is always there. You speak words of blessing over me, and you mentor me the way no human being can. Thank you for all the times you have shown up in my life. Thank you for your friendship and your wisdom.
You are always patient with me, even when I am distracted by the things of this world. You are strong and kind, fierce and brave. When problems arise, I have no need to be frustrated. When trouble comes looking for me, I do not have to be afraid because I know that you are always in my corner. Help me to walk in confidence as a beloved son of the King.
How has God been a Father to you? What does his blessing mean to you?
The Lord alone is my Savior. What a feast of favor and bliss he gives his people!
Psalm 3:8
There are some who trust in money and others who rely on their own skills and hard work. Some look for a cheap “salvation” at the bottom of a bottle, and others look for it in sensuality or comfort. But Jesus, you are the only Savior, the only one who can rescue us from the wrath we fully deserve, the only one who can bring us back to Eden. “There is no one else who has the power to save us, for there is only one name to whom God has given authority by which we must experience salvation: the name of Jesus” (Acts 4:12).
Saving me from hell would have been an incalculable gift on its own, but you did so much more than that! You brought me into your family, and you gave me a new heart—one that is tender and receptive to your voice. You sent your Spirit to take up residence within me, so now I am never without you. You have marked out a beautiful path for my life, and you speak to me as a friend. You are too wonderful for words.
Are you trusting in anything other than Jesus for your salvation and joy?
Moses prayed and God brought them quail to eat. He satisfied them with heaven’s bread falling from the sky.
Psalm 105:40
