Beschreibung

Keep up-to-date with the latest on adhesion and adhesives from an expert group of worldwide authors.

The book series “Progress in Adhesion and Adhesives” was conceived as an annual publication and the premier volume made its debut in 2015. The series has been well-received as it is unique and provides substantive and curated review chapters on subjects that touch many disciplines.

The current book contains nine chapters on topics that include multi-component theories in surface thermodynamics and adhesion science; plasma-deposited polymer layers as adhesion promotors; functional interlayers to control interfacial adhesion in reinforced polymer composites; hydrophobic materials, and coatings from natural sources; mechanics of ice adhesion; epoxy adhesives technology: latest developments and trends; hot-melt adhesives for automobile assembly; lifetime estimation of thermostat adhesives by physical and chemical aging processes; and nondestructive evaluation and condition monitoring of adhesive joints.

Audience

The volume will appeal to adhesionists, adhesive technologists, polymer scientists, materials scientists, and those involved/interested in adhesive bonding, plasma polymerization, adhesion in polymer composites, durability and testing of adhesive joints, materials from natural sources, and ice adhesion and mitigation.

Preface

The present book constitutes Volume 8 in the book series “Progress in Adhesion and Adhesives”. This book series was conceived in 2014 and the premier volume made its debut in 2015. Apropos, we did not label the premier volume as Volume 1 as at that time we did not know how this series was going to evolve. It should be recorded for posterity that Volumes 1-6 were based on review articles first published in the journal “Reviews of Adhesion and Adhesives (RAA)”. As of July 2022, I have not been associated with RAA. As a result, Volumes 7 & 8 contain chapters specifically commissioned for these volumes.

If comments from readers and colleagues are a metric for the success of a book, then these 7 Volumes have served their intended purpose, i.e. to provide state-of-the-knowledge reviews on many and varied topics within the broad purview of adhesion and adhesives. These 7 volumes have been enthusiastically received by the community and these have fully vindicated the publication of this book series. So, we have decided to keep this book series going and bring out volumes on regular (yearly) basis.

The current book (Volume 8) contains 9 chapters that have not been published before. The topics covered include: Multicomponent theories in surface thermodynamics and adhesion science; plasma-deposited polymer layers as adhesion promoters; functional interlayers to control interfacial adhesion in reinforced polymer composites; hydrophobic materials and coatings from natural sources; mechanics of ice adhesion; epoxy adhesive technology: latest developments and trends; hot-melt adhesives for automobile assembly; lifetime estimation of thermoset adhesives by physical and chemical aging processes; and nondestructive evaluation and condition monitoring of adhesive joints.

The chapters in this book were all curated and as a result these are written by world-renowned researchers actively involved in research. This book is profusely illustrated and copiously referenced.

This book (Volume 8) like its predecessors should be of appeal and interest to adhesionists, adhesive technologists, polymer scientists, materials scientists, and those involved/interested in adhesive bonding, plasma polymerization, adhesion in polymer composites, durability and testing of adhesive joints, materials from natural sources, and ice adhesion and mitigation.

Now it is my distinct pleasure to thank all those who were instrumental in materializing this book. First and foremost, my thanks go to the authors for their keen interest, sustained enthusiasm, unwavering cooperation, and sharing their valuable research experience in the form of written accounts (which essentially provided the requisite material for this book without which this book could not have been possible). Also, Martin Scrivener (Publisher) should be thanked for conceiving the idea of publishing this book series and for his steadfast interest and whole-hearted support for this book.
