The Project Gliese 581g series came to me while my husband and I were at Fort Davis, Texas. We were attending a Star Party at the MacDonald Observatory. We had spent the prior days visiting Meteor Crater, Flagstaff, and the Lowell Observatory. At the time, some of the first exoplanets were being discovered, including Gliese 581g, which was the first one I heard about at the Star Party. Many of you may know that my husband is into astrophotography. The pictures he takes of our universe are amazing. His photos of Pleiades and the Orion nebula are hauntingly beautiful, and the myth was perfect to include in Honor Bound.
I started the series with a scene from Command Decision where Josh is watching as the space shuttle explodes. This scene comes from my personal experience of standing in the parking lot of where I was working and seeing the explosion and the debris when the Challenger exploded on January 28, 1986. I remember calling my mom and telling her that I thought the shuttle had just exploded. I can still remember the shock, disbelief, and grief I felt that day.
If you wonder about the floating islands of Plateau, that came from the pumice rocks my sister gave me. She lived near Mount St. Helen’s when it erupted. I still have the rocks and the ash. I would put the pumice in a bowl of water and show my students how rocks could look deceptive. The kids were fascinated when the rocks floated on the top of the water.
Throughout my books, I capture personal moments or experiences and add them to my stories. So, when you read these stories, there are Easter eggs scattered throughout them with pieces of my life mixed in. As Julia says, “Fairytales often have a thread of truth running through them….”
Hugs,
Susan
Series Overview
The Project Gliese 581g series is a richly imagined, emotionally charged science fiction romance saga that transcends genre boundaries. It explores not only what it means to survive in a fractured galaxy—but what it means to belong, to love, to forgive, and to hope again. This is space opera reimagined through the lens of character-driven intimacy and high-stakes mythic rebirth.
OVERVIEW: SCIENCE FICTION WITH A SOUL
When Earth’s first interstellar crew travels through a mysterious alien gate, they are scattered across an unfamiliar galaxy dominated by the tyrannical Legion. What follows is a sweeping journey of resistance and renewal, where technology, prophecy, and passion collide. At the heart of the series lies the awakening of the ancient Gallant Order—a legendary force of peacekeepers whose return may shift the balance of power across the stars.
ROMANTIC ARCS: HEARTBEATS OF REBELLION
Each central couple is unique—formed in adversity, forged in fire, and shaped by trust. Together, their stories form the emotional spine of the series:
Joshua Manson & Cassa de Rola
The anchor of the rebellion.
Josh, a Navy Commander with a haunted past, and Cassa, the fierce daughter of a fallen Gallant Knight, meet when she rescues him from a crash site. Their bond is built on mutual respect, shared grief, and a common fight against tyranny. Cassa teaches Josh how to survive in this alien world; Josh helps her believe in love again. Together, they awaken the Gallant Order—not only as fighters but as symbols of hope.
“This isn’t about one night, Cassa. This is about forever.”
Ashton Haze & Kella Ta’Qui
Assassin and pilot, enemies to soulmates.
Ash is light-hearted, loyal, and lethal; Kella is a deadly Turbinta assassin raised never to trust, love, or question. But Ash does the one thing no one ever dared—he sees her. Their relationship unfolds with wit, sensuality, and slow-burning trust, challenging Kella’s indoctrination and giving Ash someone worth fighting for beyond duty.
“I need a bodyguard, 24/7.”
“Then teach me your moves. I’ll teach you mine.”
Sergi Lazaroff & La’Rue Gant
Two broken souls who find refuge in each other.
Sergi is a Russian engineer—and spy—whose dry humor masks deep loneliness. La’Rue is a freighter pilot with scars of her own. Their relationship is quiet, subtle, and deeply touching. Through tentative trust and shared danger, they discover that love doesn’t need to be loud to be life-changing.
“Now that I know I’m not the only one… I might survive longer than expected.”
Dr. Julia Marksdale & General Roan Landais
A romance born in defiance.
Julia is the brilliant scientist whose father’s discovery sparked the mission; Roan is the Legion General expected to crush the rebellion. Yet when their paths cross, so do their beliefs. Their slow-burn connection is intellectually rich, emotionally raw, and steeped in moral reckoning. Roan’s redemption is earned, not handed to him, and Julia’s strength lies in both her mind and her courage to love someone from the other side.
“You are not your father’s sins… You are the man who chose not to follow him.”
Dr. Mei Li Hú & Dorane LeGaugh
A meeting of minds—and survivors.
Mei is methodical, brilliant, and emotionally guarded. Dorane, once a boy whose family was slaughtered by the Legion, now commands empires while hiding his true allegiance as a Gallant Knight. Their romance in A New World is intellectual and sensual, driven by mutual recognition and shared trauma. Together, they begin to imagine—and fight for—a galaxy where healing is possible.
“You are not alone. Not anymore.”
THE ANTAGONISTS: MORE THAN VILLAINS
What sets the series apart is that its antagonists are not just evil—they are ideologically driven, emotionally damaged, and terrifyingly human.
A calculating, charismatic despot who fears not rebellion—but prophecy. He destroys cities not just to dominate, but to erase symbols of hope. He is a man who knows that stories—the Gallant Order, the Guardians—are more dangerous than any weapon.
“It is not their ships that threaten us. It is what they represent.”
General Coleridge Landais
The cold, aristocratic enforcer. Vain, brutal, and obsessed with legacy. He lacks Andri’s vision but thrives on fear and blood. His toxic influence on his son, Roan, becomes one of the series' most powerful emotional contrasts.
Roan Landais (as anti-hero)
He begins as a villain—but his arc is one of the most compelling. Watching Roan shed the Legion’s lies and rediscover his honor through Julia provides one of the series’ richest transformations. He is a mirror: what Josh or Ash could have become without empathy or love.
THEMATIC DEPTHS: WHAT THE SERIES EXPLORES
Beyond the action and romance, Project Gliese 581g includes themes of:
Legacy vs. Identity – Who are we without the stories we’ve been told?Love as Rebellion – Loving in a world built on fear is the boldest act of all.The Power of Myths – The Gallant Order is more than a legend. It’s a promise that good will rise again.Found Family – Scattered and broken, the Gliese crew rebuilds something stronger than what they left behind.Moral Choice – From Roan to Kella to Mei, every character must choose who they’ll be—even when it costs everything.
WHY THIS SERIES IS SO SPECIAL
Every character is complex. No flat heroes, no cartoon villains.Love drives the plot. It’s not an accessory—it’s the engine. It's emotionally honest. Grief, rage, laughter, intimacy—it’s all here.It redefines heroism. The Gallant Order isn’t reborn through force. It’s reborn through courage, compassion, and connection. It blends intimacy with scale. From whispered confessions to planetary uprisings, the emotional and galactic stakes are always linked.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Project Gliese 581g series is that rare sci-fi epic where readers fall in love with the people first—and the world second. It’s for anyone who’s ever wondered if one person—or one love—can change the course of history.
The answer here is: yes. Over and over again.
