THE MAIN CHARACTER OF RED QUEEN IS MARE BARROW, A 17-year-old girl who is living in the Kingdom of Norta. Mare and her family are Reds. The Kingdom of Norta is ruled by King Tiberias Calore VI, who is a Silver. Every Silver has supernatural powers and rules over the Reds.
Norta is at war with the Kingdom of Lakeland. Mare's three brothers: Bree, Tramy, and Shade, are already in the war on the front lines. Mare's best friend, Kilorn, has been drafted into the war. Mare makes it her mission to help Kilorn escape. She meets with Farley, the Scarlet Guard captain, who asks for money in return for helping Kilorn flee. In order to get the money she needs, Mare and her younger sister, Gisa, attempt to steal from a Silver. Mare and Gisa are caught, and Gisa's hand is broken as a punishment. When Mare goes to a tavern to steal, she runs into Cal. Cal listens to her story and gives her money. Mare goes to the King's house the next day and discovers that Cal is King Tiberias' son.
