Mindy Carlson tucked a strand of her blond hair behind her ear as she watched her boss, Jake Stephens, through the glass of his office. Biting her lower lip, she raked her gaze over his broad shoulders and firm chest, his firm jaw, and kissable lips. So damn kissable.
She sighed as she forced her eyes back to the document she was supposed to be typing up. She had fantasized about being with him ever since she became his assistant, but he always wanted to keep the distance between them, saying it wasn’t professional to fraternize with coworkers. Oh, he never said it about her and him, because, well, as far as she knew, he didn’t know she wanted him in that way. No, he said it whenever he noticed others getting swept up in office romances.
“They never work out,” he had said one day when someone busted two people a couple of offices over in the copier room, pants around their ankles. “Usually one gets more attached than the other, and then the jealousy starts. If one of them is married, it gets even worse. It changes the whole work environment, people become moody, start choosing sides, the snide remarks, constant digs at each other.” He shook his head. “It’s never worth it. People need to focus on work at work and keep their private lives separate. Everybody wins that way.”
She had squirmed in her seat when he said it, knowing she wanted more from him than to just be his assistant. It wasn’t like she wanted to date him or anything. She just wanted to get that cock of his between her legs. There had been so many stories whispered around the office about how great he was in bed that she had to find out for herself. Of course, with his views on inter-office romances, she didn’t know how anyone knew how he was in bed. Still, she wanted to find out. She spent many a night with her toy between her legs, pretending it was Jake driving into her. “But what if they truly care about each other?” she had asked.
He shrugged. “They may think so in the beginning, but it’s just the rush of working so closely together. Constant proximity makes people think they feel things they don’t truly feel. Once that new car smell wears off, they’re left with the quirks that made them step out on their marriages in the first place. It’s merely an escape, and escapes don’t last long.”
“And if they don’t want a relationship? Just sex?”
“They all say that, but they never stop there,” he told her. “Especially if the sex is good. Too many people mistake good sex for love, only to see it all crumble around them.”
She had left, keeping her desires to herself, just waiting for the moment when she could prove him wrong. This Halloween would be that time, she hoped. That is, if everything went according to her plan. All she needed to do was get Jake into the haunted house she and her coworker, Vera, set up. From there, she was sure she could get him into one of the dark corners and, hopefully, convince him to let loose a little.
She heard the door to his office open and turned around just as he stepped through the doorway. Spinning in her chair to face him, she smiled, placing her hands in her lap.
He noticed her and dipped his head slightly as he returned her smile. “Mindy, everything set for tonight? I know the staff has been looking forward to this party.”
She nodded. “Yes, sir. I set everything for the Halloween party up with just a few minor touches left to add. Vera and I finished putting the major pieces of the haunted house together last night, and we got a few volunteers who will pop out and scare the crap out of people. We also have a costume contest planned, some craft projects, and trick or treating around the desks for those who bring their children. It should be a great night.”
“Glad to hear it. Did you ever decide on a costume?”
She shook her head. “Not yet, but I have a couple of choices. I’ll decide when I get home.” It wasn’t true, of course. She knew exactly what she planned on wearing, a sexy pirate costume that pushed her breasts up and out while barely covering her ass. It was safe enough that it wouldn’t freak out the parents who brought their kids, but, hopefully, tempting enough to draw Jake into a dark corner for a little Halloween fun of an adult nature, especially if she bent over. “Did you try your costume on?” she asked. She had helped him pick it out a couple of weeks ago, since he didn’t intend on dressing up at all. That was another fun conversation.
“I’ve never been one to dress up for these things,” he had told her. “I like my jeans and Polos too much. Besides, people expect to see me, and they won’t recognize me if I’m in some silly outfit.”
“No, they need to see you taking part,” she told him. “That way, they know you’re more than just the boss. It makes them feel closer to you. Makes you seem human.”
He had cocked a brow at her, a smirk twisting his lips. “Are you saying my employees don’t think I’m human?”
She shrugged. “You’re the man behind the glass. That’s one reason we’re having this party. It’s to boost morale and give the people a different view of you. I’ll even help you pick out your costume. I’ll send you some suggestions in your email.”
He sighed, not happy with the idea, but not arguing with her, either. Eventually, he settled on a cowboy outfit and had her order it.
“I did, but I still think the chaps are a little overboard,” he told her. “The people don’t need my ass pointed out to them.”
She tried not to giggle or moan at the image that flashed through her mind. Instead, she gave a weak shrug. “It’s all part of the costume. You have to wear more than just the hat.”
“Well, I’m leaving the spurs at home,” he said adamantly. “They’re simply a danger with so many people around and in costume. I don’t need someone getting hurt.”
“Yes, sir,” she said with a nod, hiding her smile. “I’m sure that’s a smart idea.”
“Well, I’m heading to lunch,” he told her. “I’ll be back later.”
“Enjoy, sir,” she said as he walked away, her eyes glued to his firm ass. God, she loved watching him walk away. Tonight simply had to go as planned. She had fantasized about his hardness claiming her too long not so see it finally happen. “Come on Halloween.”
