Early life and the Goya Guitar Gift
Stephanie Nicks, lovingly known as "Stevie," came into this world at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. She was born to Jess and Barbara Nicks, a couple whose ancestral roots span German, English, Welsh, and Irish heritage.
Aaron Jess "A.J." Nicks Sr., Stevie's grandfather, led her on her musical journey at a young age. By the tender age of four, he had already taught her to sing enchanting duets. Her mother, with a protective nature, kept her close to home, instilling in Stevie a deep affection for fairy tales that would resonate throughout her life.
As a young toddler, Stephanie struggled to pronounce her own name, resulting in the endearing nickname "Stevie." It stuck with her, becoming an integral part of her identity.
Growing up, Stevie's family embarked on frequent relocations due to her father's role as vice president of Greyhound. This nomadic lifestyle took them from Phoenix to Albuquerque, El Paso, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. It was during these formative years that Stevie's passion for music flourished. At the age of 16, armed with a Goya guitar gifted on her birthday, she penned her first song, titled "I've Loved and I've Lost, and I'm Sad but Not Blue." Stevie's insatiable desire for music consumed her teenage years as she immersed herself in a world of records and created her own melodic universe.
While attending Arcadia High School in Arcadia, California, Stevie took her first steps into the realm of music by joining a folk rock band called the Changing Times. The group harmonized their voices, delivering captivating performances that showcased their talent.
It was during her senior year at Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, California, that Stevie's path intertwined with Lindsey Buckingham, her future musical and romantic partner. Destiny intervened when Stevie witnessed Lindsey's rendition of "California Dreamin'" at a Young Life club. Drawn to his musical prowess, she instinctively harmonized with him, the combination proving to be magical. Reflecting on that moment, Stevie reminisces, "I thought he was a darling."
At the time, Lindsey was part of a psychedelic rock band named Fritz. However, two members were departing for college, leaving an opening for a lead singer. In mid-1967, Lindsey invited Stevie to step into the role, thus commencing a new chapter in their musical journey. Fritz went on to open for legendary acts such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, igniting Stevie's stage presence and inspiring her own fiery performances.
Both Stevie and Lindsey enrolled at San José State University, where Stevie pursued a major in speech communication, envisioning a future as an English teacher. However, the call of music resonated within her soul, and with her father's blessing, Stevie made the courageous decision to leave college behind and embark on a musical career alongside Lindsey.
