Dr. Fauci tells us about an important day during COVID-19 - November 8, 2020. He was eating dinner outside with his wife and some friends when his phone rang. The person calling was Albert Bourla, who runs the drug company Pfizer. At first, Dr. Fauci was worried about what he might hear. But then came great news: Pfizer's COVID-19 shot worked really well - it protected more than 90 out of every 100 people who got it. This was huge news that gave hope during the pandemic. As Dr. Fauci thought about this big moment, he also started thinking about turning 80 soon and all the years he had spent helping sick people as a doctor.

Chapter 1: Brooklyn Boy

On Christmas Eve 1940, Anthony Fauci was born in Bensonhurst, a lively Brooklyn neighborhood in New York. His parents, Stephen and Eugenia, were both children of Italian immigrants. They had known each other since they were kids in elementary school and later fell in love.

Life for young Tony centered around his father's pharmacy, where the family lived in an apartment right above the store. While his dad ran the pharmacy, his mom took care of the home and taught Tony to care for others. The family often helped neighbors who couldn't afford medicine by letting them pay later when they had money.

Tony went to Our Lady of Guadalupe School, where strict but caring nuns pushed him to do his best. His mother also made sure he worked hard in school. Thanks to his excellent grades, Tony got a chance to attend Regis High School, a top Jesuit school in New York City. At first, he wasn't sure about going because it meant a long daily trip and leaving his Brooklyn friends behind. But his parents convinced him it was a great opportunity, especially since he got a full four-year scholarship.

At Regis, Tony did more than just study. He loved both science and literature, and he became the captain of the basketball team. Even though he was good at basketball, he knew he wouldn't become a professional player because he wasn't tall enough. Still, playing sports taught him important lessons about working hard and never giving up - skills that would help him later in life.
