CHAPTER 1: List of Characters

1. Isabel Conklin (Belly): The series' narrator and main character. She is Stephen's younger sister and the daughter of Laurel. She is believed to have had feelings for her buddy Conrad since they were children, but their romance ends at the conclusion of It's Not Summer Without You after they briefly became a couple. After he kisses her and expresses his affections to her, she begins a relationship with his brother, Jeremiah.

In the book We'll Always Have Summer, which details their two-year romance, Belly learns that Jeremiah had an extramarital affair with a sorority girl during a frat party. She gives him a smack in the face and then sobs in bed for days. She reluctantly accepts Jeremiah's proposal to show his remorse, but she remains at Cousins Beach due to constant arguments with her mother, who is upset with her for deciding to be married so young. This arrangement causes her previous affections for Conrad, who is also residing there, to gradually reemerge.

At the book's conclusion, Conrad declares his love for her. Belly erupts at his confession and claims that he was too late, making her feelings for both brothers appear conflicted. In the end, she and Jeremiah decide their relationship is not right for one another and cancel their engagement. Conrad writes Belly handwritten letters "each and every month" for the remainder of her college years after she hasn't heard from him for two years in the epilogue. She eventually starts to keep in touch with him. At her college graduation, Conrad comes up, which leads to their reconciliation. A little more than a year later, he asks Belly to marry him.

2. Conrad Fisher (Con or Connie): Jeremiah's elder brother and the oldest child of Susannah and Adam Fisher. He has a reputation for pushing loved ones away and suppressing all of his emotions. His character in the first book is a bit of a jerk since he spent the summer at the beach getting wasted or holed up in his room.

However, it is assumed that he has grown to like Belly since he often seems to be either unduly protective of or envious of males who make advances toward her. He and Belly start dating at the book's conclusion. The connection is short-lived, however, as Conrad reverts to his emotional bad habits once again.

He leaves college at the start of the second book to safeguard the beach home after learning that his father wants to sell it. Conrad and Jeremiah will be able to individually retain the home if Conrad returns to college and passes all of his examinations, according to a bargain Laurel strikes with Mr. Fisher when she finally arrives. While the grownups go, Belly and Jeremiah assist Conrad in getting ready for his exams while the grownups go. When Conrad interrupts Belly and Jeremiah's kissing, things that were seemingly going well suddenly take a turn for the worse. Conrad, though, reassures his brother that he is over Belly and that getting together with her is OK. He lied when he said he was over Belly and has always been in love with her in We'll Always Have Summer, which occurs two years later.

Throughout the book, he fights his actual emotions for her while also acting as if he doesn't. Conrad, however, is incensed and departs after learning of Jeremiah's infidelity during the bachelor celebration. Later, when Belly stumbles across him, Conrad admits his long-hidden love for her before pleading with her to stay with him instead of marrying his brother and falling down in tears. He breaks his heart when Belly rejects him, stating that he is too late. The next day, Conrad apologizes to Belly for being "very inebriated" when he made his confession, but Belly is aware of his deception. Jeremiah disappears on the day of his wedding after learning of his brother's emotions for Belly. He is discovered by Conrad in their mother's yard. After a quarrel, Jeremiah declares that he is "dead" to him and disowns him as his brother.

Conrad bids Belly farewell and returns his infinity necklace to her, claiming it "always" has and "always will" belong to her. In the epilogue, Conrad writes to Belly for the first time after a two-year hiatus and continues to do so "each and every month" throughout the remainder of her undergraduate career. Then, after she graduates from college, he comes up, and they start dating once again. All of this builds up to his marriage proposal after two years of dating her. In the last episode, Belly marries Conrad, and the two embark on a new chapter in their lives.

3. Jeremiah Fisher (Jere): He is the "golden" youngster at the beginning of the series, the one who seems to be untarnished in everyone's eyes. He is Belly's trusted companion and Conrad's devoted brother.
