A true story
If someone should ask me: “In your life
have you ever met an Angel?”
Without hesitation I would answer I
did: he had blond hair, blue eyes and
could have been four or five years old.
At times fantasy and truth cross each
other in a play that can resemble the
absurd and the incredible, but not for me…

Preface

The immediacy of the language, the wealth of the scenes and of the observations, the fresh ingenuity of the narration, the sincerity of the eyewitness, the permeating beauty of it all, make an interesting piece of work of this book.

The author tells with clarity, without veils, without modesty of people, places, and situations that find again the freshness of memories never turned off in the mind, just like coals always lid up under the ashes, ready to give a new stimulus to the flame of life.

The narration is not ostentatious, but a placated and humble one on the precious string of wisdom that makes us taste the authentic values of life, friendship and the relationships and that truly counts and gives oxygen to life.

The memories of the past become guides for the present.

The story becomes therefore an instrumental wisdom of pedagogy which, with the strength of sentiments, helps again today to launch life in the walk of hope toward the future.

Presentation

My dearest friend Prof. Mario De Santis hinted to me that he had written a story which he jealously guarded.

He read to me the drama of the story which ran in a brief but tempestuous and intense time of his childhood, with memories, sentiments and sensations relived while telling it.

While, with the sensibility and generosity of his distinguishing trait, he talked to me about every particular relative to the drafting of the book, I became aware that in certain passages his eyes got teary and the voice faded away.

Before the publication, he wanted from my part a careful reading of the story: this pleased me very much.

The treated theme and the emotional reaction uncovered in Mario undoubtedly took me quickly and involved me completely.

I must say there is a long and deep friendship that ties me to Mario. The friendship, born amongst the school desks, is characterized by countless and often entertaining anecdotes.

I still remember the years when we attended the secondary school and the senior secondary school and recently, thanks to him, we had a happy reunion of the ex-alumni, “The boys of 68”. With great joy we held the reunion in December 11th 2010.

Mario’s book contains everything: we can find the great mystery of life and of death, the family values, the importance of solidarity, of the sacrifice, the peculiarities of the then Sulmona, of the daily life and main aspects of various seasons.

The text is rich of careful notations, intricacies which, may be, awake great emotions, giving the sensation of living, as the protagonist, the happening which follows in the course of reading the tale.

Mario has relived the event in a very sensitive way.

Therefore, with all of my hearth, I wish that the book will have in my wisdom the well-deserved success.
