THE BUS RIDE POEMS E-Book

Beschreibung

The poems were conceived and written in a first draft, between 2017 and 2019, while commuting on the local buses between Heiligenstadt and Klosterneuburg-Weidling, between the bus stop at the domicile and the endstation of bus 400 at Heiligenstadt. From there the poet would travel by expressway, either with the ÖBB train or the subway U4 to the city of Vienna. He'll enjoy quality time meeting friends, supporters, and Muses. The themes of the poems are the observance of city life; inner reflections about relationships; thoughts about humanity in the doldrums; dehumanization; the human catastrophe; hospitalization of the poet; recent friends and Muses; the loss of individuality; and self-reflections on a world of gender turmoil. The original drafts have been edited in an ongoing process and completed by 2023.

Foreword

In the everyday life of a poet, commuting has been not only the means to obtain certain types of foodstuff and goods the poet has preference for, but also to change from the contrasts of one place to another, one specific environment to another environment, whereby observing the varied faces of people and experience the vistas of landscapes with interesting details, not noticed otherwise. Changes of views, due to local climatic changes in the variation of natural light, especially with the views over the Daube River to the wooden hills of the Leopoldsberg and Kahlenberg, across fine cultivated vineyards in a close vivinity of the city of Vienna; and when getting closer to, its towers of high-rise buildings appear on the horizon just before Heiligenstadt.

Unless one takes the more comfortable ride with the train and arrives at the end station in the Franz-Josephs-Bahnhof in town, where you could change to the tram ‘D’, which takes you past the historical buildings on the Ringstrasse to the station opposite the opera. Here, life of the inner city begins and where the hub of the masses of adventure-seeking tourists are directed along Kärntnerstrasse toward the famous Stephansplatz-square and its dome, with one completed tower.

On the opposite end of this commuting trip, in Klosterneuburg, a city close to its famous sister, but both cities with similar ancient histories, its twin tower dome, part of its fortified castle, dating back to the Middle Ages, sits on the dominating hill above the city roofs, close to town and the spread of cadastral villages and hamlets. A different world awaits tourists and visitors.

Yet, in this contrasting world of people and places, a mix of rural and city culture, and although quite close by car travel, the poet had once found himself catapulted into by sheer fate looking for affordable accommodation, in the vicinity of the Viennese Woods. Indeed, he and his spouse found a domicile that they could afford, arriving from a long stay in South Africa. Now then, once settled in their bedsitter, they had the good fortune of a separate kitchenette, where the poet could establish himself a niche to write and draw and his landlord had provided him with a writing desk.

However, commuting, due to having had met pleasant and interesting people in the capital city, he could experience a great exchange of ideas and support from his friends, who were interested in the arts. These times of an inspired life, with endless rounds of discussion and visits to galleries and museums, fruitful and enjoyable, have contributed to his working of journals, besides many notes and sketches, which became often instant poems and prose, highlighted by a series of drawings and paintings.

FIRST SNOW

At late morning’s steady dawn

one’s mind sweeps thru’

continued fuzzy dreams.

Irritating coughing subsided

bacillus/ virus lies

frozen supine

embedded in icy cubes of snow.

Having lived thru’ hell’s cold

post-inoculation

arms and legs cast with shackles

of lead.

The first snow across

Place de Juif has vanished

overnight

people crisscross the Square

as usual

one visitor enters the exhibition

Augen-Blicke

looking at small-format

photographs.

B phones: “When are you back?”

Lily enters to call on Mrs I.and R.

Mr T phones to make sure:

“We have contacted the Chief Rabbi

who wanted to see the exhibition.”

The air is clean.

Inside the Art Shop a huge photo

of a glacier reflects the cold

December day outside.

A quiet air of calm reigns

in the stealthy air

It’ll be a great New Year 5777

with a great meaning

as messaged by the Kabbalah.

“I do not know in what kind

of condition I’ll be at the

beginning of the New Year

2018.” Werner said on the

phone. “But my plate is still

filled this year with visits

to hospitals.”

“Same here.” I said. “Just

eight months ago I had my

left hip done.”

That’s then we met at

Room seven.

Two weeks back I had a

laser op to my left eye

a returning cataract.

“Well“ W said “today I can’t

come and see you.

But when you are at the

hospital phone me and

I’ll come to visit you.”

“OK. Sure.”

I still wonder if Dr So will

have a great go at my hip

and get the length of my

right foot OK the first time.

I’m confident she will.

It’s a real treat to be sitting
