For Kapac: so much love on four legs.

Dear Reader,

The following is a police story.

It centers around two characters: Inspector Aguirre and Captain Güiraldes.

Inspector Aguirre is the head of the Secretariat of Security and Police at the Ministry of War of the Argentine Republic.

Aguirre usually meets with his friends, Professor Ingenieros, Dr. Puiggrós, and Engineer Etchebarne. His wife affectionately calls this group “the Wednesday boys.” At work, he is assisted by Officers Baltierrez, Bermúdez, and Cárdenas.

Captain Güiraldes’ staff includes the following officers: Salvador Vargas, Ramón Garmendia, and Nora Bustamante. He spent his childhood in the city of San Antonio de Areco, in the Province of Buenos Aires.

“Longest river in Europe...”

The inspector, pencil in hand, was about to fill in the crossword puzzle when a knock at the door interrupted him.

“Yes, come in!”

“Excuse me, Inspector,” said the young officer. “You have a call on the switchboard from Judge Rodríguez Casas.”

The inspector got up and, within moments, heard the judge’s voice.

“Forgive me, my friend. I didn’t have your office number, so I went through the switchboard.”

“Please, Your Honor, what can I do for you?”

“Look, Inspector, it’s a minor incident, but I need to share it with someone I trust. If you have time, I’ll be waiting for you.”

Fifteen minutes later, the inspector entered the judge’s house, leaving his coat and hat at the entrance. A mirror helped him confirm that his hair was in order. He then climbed a wide staircase to the judge’s office.

“Listen, Aguirre, I want to tell you about a certain feeling. Don’t look at me strangely. Since my wife’s death, I’ve been spending more time at home. I’ve noticed, through small signs, that someone has been searching through my office, but I can’t tell if anything has been stolen.”

“I understand, Your Honor. I personally notice even the slightest change in the position of a pen in my office. I always know when my secretary has been there because she immediately throws away the wood shavings from my pencil sharpener.”

Aguirre continued talking to the judge and after smoking a cigarette he left the office: “I am going to take care of the matter, Judge, you can remain calm.

A quiet morning in Sucre.

The car was ready. The engine was running. There were two occupants. The driver was commenting on the peculiarities of the Bolivian *cholitas*. He looked at them, and a mocking smile shone on his face.

The other man remained silent. His hands played with a cane that ended in a metal tip, concealing a knife inside.

Young Ezequiel appeared on the sidewalk, books in hand. He was on his way to the National Library of Chuquisaca. He continued walking down Carlos Calvo Street. His thesis, on the introduction of cassava cultivation by the Spaniards, fascinated him.
