Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in 1809. He was an American poet and writer who had a major impact on literature. He is known primarily for his gloomy, mysterious tales and is considered to be a forerunner not only of the detective novel, but also of fantasy and science fiction.

After studying at the University of Virginia and beginning a short military career, he tried to make a living from writing, without a great deal of success. He wrote newspaper articles, poetry and even a novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. His most successful works were his short stories, including The Fall of the House of Usher, The Man of the Crowd, The Black Cat and many others. He died in Baltimore in 1849.
