THE HANDMAID'S TALEIS A 1985 NOVEL BY MARGARET Atwood. The story takes place in Gilead, which was once part of the United States of America. Gilead is ruled by a military dictatorship.
The story begins when the President of the United States and most of the members of Congress are killed during a staged attack. A Christian Fundamentalist group, called "The Sons of Jacob," rises up and makes the United States Constitution null and void, using the excuse that they will restore order in the country. The first thing they take away from the citizens are women's rights, followed closely by human rights. Women are no longer allowed to read, for example. From there, they establish a militarized country and run it based on the Old Testament of The Bible.
Offred is the narrator and main character of the story. Her name means, literally, "Of Fred." Offred is a handmaid, which means she is being kept for reproductive purposes. She must wear a handmaid's uniform, and she is given tasks to do. Gilead is rampant with sexually transmitted disease and pollution, and therefore, many of the people in the society are sterile. Therefore, one of Offred's tasks to become pregnant. Offred would only be considered worthy as long as she could become pregnant. She has little freedom. When she is allowed to go out, she must be supervised, and she can only go out to do the shopping or other tasks that have been assigned to her.
