Introducing The Light Between Oceans

THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS TELLS THE STORY OF TOM AND ISABEL Sherbourne. Tom is a lighthouse worker who works on Janus Rock, which is an island off the coast of Port Partageuse in Australia. Prior to becoming a lighthouse keeper, Tom was a soldier in World War I. Tom took the job as keeper after the keeper before him lost his mind and could no longer keep the job.

When Tom first arrives in Port Partageuse, he meets Isabel. The two instantly fall in love and are married a year later and Isabel goes to live with Tom in the lighthouse. The couple is incredibly happy together. However, their happiness is quickly shattered when Isabel suffers three miscarriages in a row, which leaves Isabel trapped in a deep depression.

One day, Tom notices a shipwrecked boat on the island. When he goes to investigate the boat, he finds a man who has died. He also finds a small baby, still alive and crying. Tom immediately brings the baby inside and hands her to Isabel. Isabel instantly assumes the role of the child's mother. She is able tobreastfeed the infant because she miscarried only two weeks ago.

Tom is hesitant about allowing Isabel to mother the child. However, he allows it and buries the deceased man on the island. Tom goes along with the story that Isabel has given birth to a healthy child. They name the girl Lucy.

Lucy grows up believing Tom and Isabel are her parents. The family is happy once again. Two years after Lucy's arrival, the family makes the journey to the mainland during Tom's first leave. Isabel's parents are happy to see their granddaughter. Tom, however, quickly learns about a woman named Hannah Roennfeldt. Hannah's husband, Frank, and infant daughter, Grace, mysteriously disappeared two years earlier during a town attack.

Upon hearing the story of Hannah, Tom knows right away that the man he found in the boat was Frank and that Lucy Sherbourne is actually Grace Roennfeldt. He makes up his mind that he wants to tell Hannah the truth. However, when he approaches Isabel with the idea, she becomes angry. Isabel argues that too much time has passed now for them to return the child to Hannah with a simple apology. Isabel says that returning the child would cause more harm than good. Tom is convinced again that it is best to stay quiet.
