Maisy and the Missing Mice

THE MAISY FILES BOOK 1

Prologue

The light from the street lamps made gray circles on the sidewalk and pavement all around her. Maisy rested against the building, adjusted her fedora hat, and pulled her last cherry lollipop from her pocket. Distracted by the sweet scent of her candy, she didn't notice her dog's low growls that should have warned her of the approach of someone on a bike who was rapidly coming toward her. Suddenly, she heard a low, gruff voice call her name. She looked up in time to see a paper being tossed into one of the circles of light on the ground. She pushed herself off of the building and made her way toward the lamp post. With unsteady fingers, Maisy reached down to pick up the note. She opened the crinkled paper and saw it was smudged with dirt from where it had rested on the sidewalk. It only took her a moment to read the note.

If you ever want to see your lollipops again, forget about the missing mice.

-The Black Boot

Her eyes narrowed into tiny slits. The Black Boot, as he had taken to calling himself, appeared to be nothing but a thief. Maisy didn't know how, but she was going to take him down. Of course, she had to figure out who he was first. It was bad enough that he had stolen the school's mascots, but now he had admitted to stealing her collection of cherry lollipops. And nobody got away with stealing Maisy's cherry lollipops.

Chapter1

It had all started earlier today at lunch. Maisy and her best friend, Veronica, had been enjoying their pizza and talking about Veronica's birthday party that was to take place tomorrow night at an Italian pizza restaurant. They were excited that Veronica's mom and stepdad were throwing her party at the Andiamo Pizzeria. It was the girls' favorite restaurant in town, because it had a lot of fun stuff for kids to do. It was a regular restaurant, but there were also a lot of games to play in the arcade. Plus, both girls tried to keep pizza as a steady part of their diets.

Maisy and Veronica had only been seated for a few minutes when the principal had come over the intercom with an announcement. Her voice was calm, but it was obvious she was annoyed. “Students, this is Principal Hollendar. Our school mascots have been stolen from their home in the science lab. If anyone has any information, please come to the office. A student reported seeing a black boot disappearing around the corner in the hallway shortly before they were discovered to be missing. That is our only clue at this time. A reward will be given to any student who helps find and return the mice.”

Veronica was furious. She tossed her blonde hair over her shoulder and joined the other students in their shouts of anger. Maisy just closed her eyes at the mention of a clue. She could feel her skin tingling with excitement. She loved mysteries and was excellent at solving them. In fact, the other students knew of her talent and came to her whenever they had a problem. They knew she would solve the case quickly and for a fair price. But, Maisy didn't work for money. She worked for cherry lollipops. They were the second most precious thing to her, the first being her little dog, Reesie.

Maisy Sawyer was not like the average fourth grade students that attended West Valley Elementary. She had grown to love old black and white mystery movies, the kind that grandparents had watched when they were children back in the Stone Age. When she was on a case, her world seemed to fade to the black and white of one of those mystery movies. Shades of gray colored everything. She even imagined her bedroom at home to be her detective agency office. Most of the time, it had walls painted in bright blue and almost everything else was purple, including Reesie's dog bed. But, when she was on a case, the room changed into something from an old movie. The walls were cracked, the window's blinds broken and stuck in one position, and it was cluttered with old boxes and furniture. It was also shaded in gray, black, and white. The window showed a view of a city skyline, instead of the reality of a small neighborhood in a little Ohio town. The one constant between Maisy's imaginary detective agency office and reality was her little typewriter. Maisy didn't have anything against computers, but she liked to type her case notes the old-fashioned way. Maisy couldn't explain why everything changed to black and white when she was on a case. She just knew that with her world in black and white, putting together clues to solve a mystery was much easier.

Now, as she sat in the cafeteria, listening to the outraged cries of her fellow students, she opened her eyes. The color drained from her vision, like paint running in lines down a white canvas. The yellow cafeteria walls, the bright red trays on the long, wooden tables, and even the people around her, shifted into black and white versions of themselves.

Maisy smiled. She knew the principal was a generous lady. Maisy had once helped her find her missing keys, and she had gotten three lollipops from the candy drawer that was usually reserved for teachers. That hadn't even been a real case! But, this was a big case. She wondered how many cherry lollipops Principal Hollendar would give her for solving it.

Of course, like the other students, Maisy also loved the little mice that had become the elementary school's mascots. The official mascot of West Valley's high school and middle school was actually a rather vicious looking tiger. The elementary students were officially known as the tiger cubs. But, last year, Lizzie Franklin had liberated some live mice from her brother, who had intended to feed them to his pet snake. She had brought them to school and asked the science teacher, Mr. Brown, if they could be class pets. After the full story came out, Principal Hollendar had insisted that Lizzie return them to her brother, since she had stolen them. But, her parents had agreed to let Lizzie keep them at school as long as the principal and science teacher approved. Both of them had, and the little mice became quite popular. The students had started seeing them as sort of unofficial mascots of the elementary.

“Earth to Maisy. Come in Maisy.”

Maisy laughed as she realized she had been lost in thought. Veronica stood and picked up Maisy's tray. “What are you doing?” Maisy asked.

“Well, don't you have a case to solve?” Veronica replied, raising her eyebrows in curiosity.

Maisy just smiled, nodded her head, and rescued her lollipop she had been saving for dessert from the tray Veronica was about to dump. She unwrapped it, and savored its delicious flavor for a moment before exiting the cafeteria.

Chapter2

On her way to the office, Maisy stopped by her classroom to get some needed items from her locker. She was going to be gathering clues, and every good detective knew that keeping track of clues was essential.

She had once been surprised with a case while simply walking home from the park. She had been unprepared for little Nathan Sanders, a first grader, to run through his yard, grab her by the arms, and beg her to help him find his pet gerbil. The poor kid had been crying his eyes out.

She had felt sorry for him and agreed to help. But, she hadn't had her notebook handy. It had taken her nearly two days to solve the case. Had she been prepared, she would have seen the links in the clues much more quickly. She had discovered that the gerbil was stuck in the wall as a result of the remodeling project his parents were completing. Luckily, the little gerbil, Pinkie, had been safe. After a day or so of being in his cage, he got back to his old self. Maisy had vowed to never be without her detective tools again. Had it taken her any longer, poor Pinkie might have had a worse fate.

She was just finishing up in her locker when she heard the click-clack sounds of high heel shoes on the tile floor. That sound meant only one thing: a teacher was coming. Maisy quickly adjusted her things to cover the plastic grocery bag filled with cherry lollipops, grabbed her fedora hat and notebook, and looked up in time to see Mrs. Kilgore entering the room. Though in Maisy's vision, Mrs. Kilgore appeared in black and white, Maisy knew that the dress she was wearing was a bright green number she wore often. She thought it suited her well, especially because her hair was not really the dark gray Maisy was seeing. It was actually a dark, coppery-red mass of curls.

Mrs. Kilgore was a fun teacher, and Maisy liked her much more than she had liked her third grade teacher, Mr. Thomas. He had a glass eye that was always rolling around in his head. It was a little creepy. Plus, he usually smelled like gym socks. Mrs. Kilgore, on the other hand, usually smelled like vanilla and used phrases like, “Chop! Chop!” and “Move it along now!” whenever she had to keep her fourth graders on task. She also liked to clap a lot when she said things like that. Maybe Mrs. Kilgore had really wanted to be a music teacher.

“Hello, Maisy,” Mrs. Kilgore said in a cheerful tone. “Let me guess. Our favorite detective is off to find our missing mice. Am I right?” She laughed a little, and Maisy felt her face get warm.

Maisy liked solving cases, helping people, and getting lollipops. But, she was still getting used to the attention being a detective sometimes brought. “Yes, Mrs. Kilgore. I just came to get some things to help me work on the case.” Maisy had been holding her black fedora hat in her left hand. She placed it on her head and indicated that she also needed the notebook in her right hand by raising it and giving it a little shake.

“Well, just remember that lunch is over in fifteen minutes. You may work on the case until then. Just don't be late getting back to class.” She gave a little wink and walked toward her desk.

“Thanks, Mrs. Kilgore. I'll be sure to be back for math.”

Maisy started to leave, but Mrs. Kilgore's voice caused her to stop. “Did you have anything for lunch besides that lollipop?”

Maisy felt her face get even warmer as she admitted, “I had about half of my pizza.” Mrs. Kilgore sighed, shook her head, and took a banana out of the lunch bag sitting on her desk. She walked back to Maisy and handed it to her.

“I'll feel better if you eat this too. Besides, you need something healthy. You have to be able to think clearly if you hope to get our little friends back.”

Maisy smiled and took the banana. She was too eager to get started on the case to eat just then. So, she put it in her locker before she strolled out of the room.

Maisy wanted to make the most of the little time she had to work with before lunch was over. So, as Principal Hollendar had directed, she made her way toward the office. The hallway was empty and full of shadows. Maisy felt a prickly sensation on the back of her neck. She got the feeling she was being watched. She also caught a whiff of pepperoni pizza that must have been drifting up from the cafeteria. Her stomach made a low rumbling sound, and she was suddenly grateful for the banana Mrs. Kilgore had given her. She'd have to eat it as soon as she got back to class. Ever the professional, she ignored both the prickly feeling and her stomach as she pushed on the glass door that opened into the elementary office.

The secretary, Ms. Fall, smiled warmly as Maisy entered. She was an older woman, whose hair really was gray. Her round face had tiny wrinkles all over it, but they only seemed to make her look kind.

Maisy held up her notebook. The cover was illustrated to look like a police badge, and Maisy had written Maisy Sawyer, Private Detective in the center of the badge. “I'd like to see Principal Hollendar, please,” Maisy requested in a professional and firm tone.

“Of course, Maisy,” the secretary replied. “She's in her office. I'll take you back.”

Maisy nodded to Ms. Fall and thanked her. She followed her through the main office to the back hallway, which was lined with offices and meeting rooms. Principal Hollendar's office was first in line. The door was open and the principal was sitting at her desk, typing on her keyboard.

“Excuse me, Principal Hollendar.” The principal looked up saw Maisy and Ms. Fall in the doorway. “I'd like to speak with you about the missing mice, if that's all right.”

Principal Hollendar nodded. “Thanks, Ms. Fall. I have a few minutes to speak with Maisy.”

The secretary patted Maisy on the shoulder and told her, “Good luck finding those cute, little mice. I do hope they're ok.” Maisy assured her that she would do her best.

“Have a seat, Maisy. I'm glad you want to help with this.”

“Of course I will help. All the kids in the cafeteria are furious. I was hoping you could get me started on the case by answering a few questions.” Maisy pulled a pencil from the spiral binding of her notebook, flipped to a clean page, and wrote Missing Mice on the top.

“Well, there is not much to go on,” Principal Hollendar said while pushing her long hair behind one ear. “A student said he remembered seeing a black boot turning the corner as he was leaving Mr. Brown's classroom, after he noticed the mice were missing. Do you know James Hamil?”

Maisy nodded. James was a fifth grader who played on all of the community sports teams. Veronica had a huge crush on him because of his athletic ability. But, he was also smart. He won the county spelling bee two years in a row. Maisy had a huge crush on him too, but it was more for his academic skills than his jump shot.

“Can you tell me what time James saw the black boot?” Maisy asked.

“Yes, it was shortly before lunch. James feeds the mice on his way to lunch every day. So, it was right around 11:30 this morning. He said he went to feed them, and they were just gone. The only thing out of the ordinary that he noticed was the black boot. That hallway is usually empty at lunchtime.”

“Thanks, Principal Hollendar. I'll start looking into it right away.” Maisy scribbled what she had learned into her notebook and glanced at the clock above the principal's desk. She only had a couple of minutes to get back to her classroom. “Well, I have to get back to class. I'll keep you posted on what I find.”

Principal Hollendar stood and walked around the desk. She sat on the edge and looked Maisy right in the eyes. “There will be a big reward for you if you find the mice.” She winked and then showed Maisy out of her office.

Maisy reached the glass entrance to the office and again caught a whiff of pepperoni pizza. Her stomach gurgled and rumbled even louder this time. She was much hungrier than she had realized. But, being on a case did that to her. She often ignored things that didn't pertain to the job at hand.

She pushed the door open and almost ran right into Xander King. For a moment, she thought she had hit him with the door. His eyes and nose were red and runny. Xander was a fourth grader, too. But, he was in Miss Tillman's class. “I'm sorry, Xander. Are you ok?” Maisy asked.

His voice was scratchy when he answered, “Oh, yes. It's just allergies. They've been pretty bad lately.” He walked past her and turned left to go to the nurse's office. Maisy shrugged and was glad she didn't have allergies. They looked awful. She set off toward her classroom. She hated to admit it, but she couldn't wait to get the banana from her locker. She was starving.

Chapter3

Maisy sat in her chair and tried her very best to listen to Mrs. Kilgore talk about how the proper way to plot a point on a line graph was to count over and then go up. But, Maisy was not interested in line graphs at the moment. She peeled the gray shaded peel from the banana Mrs. Kilgore had given her earlier. As she ate the banana, she chewed slowly. She was lost in thought.

Before she knew it, everyone around her was standing up and getting in line. “It's time for recess,” Veronica whispered when she walked by Maisy's desk. Maisy jumped out of her seat. She walked to her place in line and was ready to go by the time Mrs. Kilgore asked for attention. As the class made its way out of the room and into the hallway, Maisy realized that many of the other students were wearing their jackets, and she decided she wanted hers too. She raised her hand.

“Yes, Maisy,” Mrs. Kilgore said.

“Can I get my jacket?” Maisy asked.

“Of course,” Mrs. Kilgore replied. “We'll see you outside.”

Maisy made her way back to her classroom at a pace that was somewhere between a quick walk and a run. She dashed through the door and pulled her locker open. She grabbed her jacket, closed the locker, ran to the door, and stopped so quickly she almost fell over. Something was not right. Her heart raced as she slowly turned and walked back to her locker. She pulled the door open and searched through her locker. She moved her backpack aside and her heart dropped. The plastic bag that had housed her lollipop collection was gone. The lack of the crinkling sound usually made by the plastic bag had been the clue that took a moment to sink in. From the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of a piece of paper on the bottom of her locker. She picked it up and unfolded the square.

Come to the front entrance of the school at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Your lollipops are safe, for now.

-The Black Boot

Maisy could not believe her eyes. The Black Boot obviously knew she was working on the case. She was just outraged that he had the nerve to steal her precious cherry lollipop collection.
