William Wymark Jacobs (September 8, 1863 - September 1, 1943), was a Britishhumorist, writer and narrator. And 'better known for one of his macabre tales, The Monkey's Paw, included in the book of short stories The Lady of the Barge (1902). Most of his work, however, is attributed to the comedy genre.
Jacobs was born in Wapping (London) in which wharf his father worked. He attended a private school and then at Birkbeck College. In 1879 he started working as postmaster. He published his first novel in 1885. His road to success has been relatively slow. For economic reasons, Jacobs does not have the courage to leave his job until 1899. He married the following year with a militantsuffragette, settling in Loughton, Essex, where today a plaque is stored in his memory.
His literary output has decreased enough during the Second World War, and has since applied himself mainly to adapt his stories for the stage. His first adaptation wasThe Phantom Jerry Bundler, which debuted in London in 1899.
Jacobs died on 1 September 1943 in Hornsley Lane (Islington, London).
