In a far-off land, desolate and cold, there lived a beautiful princess with her two children, whom she adored and pampered. The princess’s whole life was dedicated to caring for her children, ensuring that they lacked for nothing. Each day, she awoke early and personally accompanied her children to the schoolrooms where their teachers provided them with the best education a noble could receive. Science, the arts and humanities were just a few of the subjects that the children studied. The princess paid careful attention to this aspect of her children’s lives, knowing that in the future, they would assume positions in the government, possibly even in distant, unknown kingdoms.

The princess lived alone, since her husband, the prince, was always abroad, embarking on strange adventures, hunting exotic animals in faraway lands, or sparing with fantastical multi-headed monsters. His desire for adventure and conquest knew no bounds. But the princess was happy that her husband traveled so much, since his manner was crude and violent. It seemed to her that after so much time in a savage and unfeeling world, he had lost his humanity and it had been a long time since she had enjoyed his company. Gone were the times when the prince was head-over-heels for her and would travel from afar to be reunited with his beloved. He had burned with such love and passion that he couldn’t bear to be without her.

But since the day they were married, the princess began to notice a kind of change in her aging husband. Over time, this small change became more noticeable and eventually he became a real ogre, who mistreated her and the two children, sometimes hitting them, sometimes belittling and insulting them. That was when the princess suggested that her husband travel to distant lands and give full reign to his aggressive and bad-tempered nature. At least this way, life would be safer and more peaceful for everyone.

The princess’s life was simple but busy. It revolved around her children, leaving her little free time to spend with her many friends, who came from everywhere to visit her, since the princess never left her castle. Some of these friends even came from another nearby kingdom to enjoy her hospitality, her delightful conversation, her musical refinement, her exquisite eye for antiques, and her culinary skills. The evenings were congenial and extended until the wee hours of the morning. Many times, it was so late that some of her friends had to stay within the castle walls to ensure their safety, since traveling through those lands at that hour could be dangerous; they might meet with hungry, savage animals. During these gatherings, while the minstrels played, the princess and her ladies chatted with increasing vivacity, undoubtedly due to the cask of fine wine that they drank from, accompanying their drink with rich, delicious meats, often brought from afar, allowing their tasters to enjoy new delicacies. They shared all the gossip and rumors whispered around the court, and they laughed at each other’s witty remarks.

The princess was very beautiful, and despite how much she had suffered from the heartache caused by her husband, she had a wonderful sense of humor. She was always smiling and kind to everyone around her. Her warm, friendly, sensible character earned her the love and respect of everyone in her kingdom. Nonetheless, she missed her native land. She had married the prince and moved to this new country without even knowing the language. For love, she had left her native country, her friends, and her whole family, a kingdom full of light, sun, and friendly, congenial, and welcoming people, to live in a faraway land that she did not know, full of serious, taciturn people, though they were well-educated and respectful.
