The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson
| Conversation Starters
Life is hard. Mark Manson knows this. Lucky for you, he also has an idea of how to get through some of life’s toughest problems. In this one of a kind self-help book, Manson provides a unique perspective on dealing with life’s bullsh*t. He claims that the key to living a good life is not all the feel-good positive advice we have been fed over the years; it’s actually in not giving a f*ck about anything at all. In this book, he dishes out all his secrets in getting over bad experiences, in learning to accept failure, and in ultimately understanding ourselves in the pursuit of self-improvement.
Manson’s article of the same title was an instant hit after he posted it on his blog. The book, which is the second one he has ever published was released in 2006, and has since become a national best-seller.

THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A FU*K BEGINS WITH THE unconventional success story of Charles Bukowski. Bukowski was a loser, and despite the immense success of his best-selling books, be remained a loser up until his death. The key to Bukowski’s success, however, was the fact that he was aware that he was a loser, and accepted it. In fact, he used this awareness as material, which in turn generated his success. On his grave stone, he sends the cryptic message Manson emphasizes in the first chapter of his book: “Don’t Try.”
Manson elaborates on this point by discussing an important concept he uses throughout the novel: The Feedback Loop From Hell. This is when people’s emotions get the better of them, and they find themselves anxious, angry, or worried about feeling the way they do. Manson attributes these feelings to our environment today, and the mentality that society has developed about flaunting one’s lavish lifestyle all over social media, thus making us feel bad for ourselves whenever we can’t seem to do the same. The key, he says, to overcoming those feelings of worthlessness and self-doubt is to not give a fu*k, which leads back to his primary assertion of not trying.
