Introducing The Swans of Fifth Avenue

THE SWANS OF FIFTH AVENUE IS A HISTORICAL FICTION book that tells the story of Babe Paley and Truman Capote, who were both members of the high society in New York City during the 1950s. Capote and Paley had a strong friendship for many years. Their friendship often made headlines during the time period. In the novel, Paley is portrayed as Capote's muse.

Babe Paley was born Barbara Cushing. Her father was an internationally known brain surgeon. She had two older sisters who both married wealthy men. In the fall of 1934, she was a debutante. This began her socialite career.

Four years later, she became Vogue's fashion editor. She was able to obtain clothing from top designers this way. Designers often gave her clothes to wear to social events because of her social standing. She was named the second best-dressed woman by Time in the early 1940s.

Her first marriage was to Stanley Grafton Mortimer, Jr., an oil heir with whom she had two children, Amanda Jay Mortimer, and Stanley Grafton Mortimer III. Many reports stated that Paley abandoned and neglected her children frequently in order to maintain her social life. She married William S. Paley in 1947, a year after her first marriage ended. They had two children together, Kate and William, Jr.

Her marriage with William Paley was not a happy marriage, as William often had affairs outside of their marriage. She became so stressed out with her marriage and always being in the public eye that she began smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. This habit led to her death from lung cancer.
