Trivia Facts About The Three Secret Cities
T
he Three Secret Cities is a book written by Matthew Reilly. It is the fifth book of the Jack West series. Jack West wins the Great Games, and he creates turmoil among the four legendary kingdoms. The evil forces go after him, and he must find The Three Secret Cities before his hunters get hold of him. It seems an impossible task, but nobody else can do it. The three legendary cities have the weapons that can end the threat to Jack's life and to the impending end of the world. But West's enemies are intent on destroying him.
The book is filled with many colorful characters that could confuse the reader who is new to the series. Many of the characters are taken from the author's previous book series Shane Scarecrow Schofield. Reading the book is an act of suspending one's belief because the villains sound too strange, according to some critics. The author replicates the formula for an action-filled blockbuster story. It is replete with explosions and high-energy scenes. The fast pace does not slow down starting from page one. Picking up from the previous book in the series, The Four Legendary Kingdoms, the author orients new readers of the previous book's story that is relevant to the fifth book. There is, however, little time to do extensive orienting and characters are not given time for rumination. The characters are hero archetypes, with few details about their personalities and backgrounds. Their characters slowly gain fullness as the books in the series progress, becoming more colorful and distinct. New readers who are more interested in the excitement of impossible chases and escapes will enjoy the book without going deep into the characters.
Critic Simon McDonald says it would help to read the previous books in the series, but the reader does not have to know all the books. He can still enjoy the latest in the series without having read the others. The story has outstanding scenes like the explosion at a skyscraper in New York City with an attack plane which uses missile pods and cannons. Another equally stunning scene is the one set in London involving a tank. A favorite character among the series' fans will make a surprise appearance. There is a final twist as the book ends which may cause some teary moments. An epilogue also adds to the dramatic final twist, though some critics say it is an unnecessary one. The review by Simon McDonald thinks the book is overcrowded, but the major characters are given their own moments. The book has the signature Reilly scenes such as the outrageous explosions, the heart-stopping hand-to-hand combat, suspenseful feats, and evil villains getting their deserving end. The book accordingly raises the bar for the action narrative. The sixteen-year-old reviewer at booktopia.com, Charlie, says the book caused him strong emotions he had to stop reading and walk away for a while because of too much excitement. He felt sad, angry and eager to know whether the protagonists would be able to escape their dangerous situation. He likes Reilly's ability to create suspense as well as instill hope. It was fun to read, and he recommends it to readers. A review by mashleasreads.com says that despite the fast pace of the storyline, Reilly "slowly introduces all the key elements in a way that is easy to understand.." The review cites the "sensational" interaction among the characters. The villains are extremely mean and dislikable. It is also darker in tone than the other books in the series, with twists that are unpredictable. The reviewer had many emotional moments and even cried in one instance. "The bit that I liked the most was the ending. It is literally a heart-pounding, edge of your seat, OH MY GOD MATTHEW kind of ending," the review says. The Associated Press review says the books are a "clever mix of history, mythology, and geography." It is "one of the best action-thrillers published in the past few years." The book is accordingly a perfect book to read for the winter months with its heart-racing plot.
An Amazon review thinks the book's ending "seemed rushed and incomplete." The book cannot stand on its own. It left the reader hanging in a bad way. "I was looking for the finish. This is a part A book and seems we will have to wait for part B. Yet the end of part A didn't resolve like a mini-ending."
Another Amazon review says through his favorite characters have been slowly relegated to the backroom, Jack West continues to dominate. He "continues to impress," according to the reviewer.
The surprise appearance of the Black Knight is a good one but "Scarecrow's response to Jack West" is disappointing...but I realize that Scarecrow / Jack and the Black Knight would be invincible."
