Preface

Gurudev: You may ask some questions! What do you want to listen to today? Hmm?

[A man in the audience says, “The Upanishad!”]

Gurudev: Upanishad… This is Upanishad!

“Upanishad ” is sitting close – sitting close to the Master, not just physically, but also mentally… and we’re all sitting very close, physically and mentally!

Now, what does “sitting close” or “mentally” sitting close to the Master mean?

It means understanding, right; understanding the words of the Master.

Some things cannot be fully expressed in words; only an indication can be made. The deeper the subject, the lesser, words suffice. Whatever you can describe is gross. If you can describe something totally, it is very gross! The subtler you go, the more difficult it becomes to express, the more difficult, to describe. Do you see what I’m saying?

You can experience pain, but it’s difficult to describe that pain totally. You can experience an emotion, but it’s impossible to describe it totally, let alone make someone else experience it. So you experience love, but you cannot describe or express it, totally. This is why lovers are always sort of restless! They want to express, but they cannot find the words to express! They cannot find a single expression, capable of totally expressing what they feel! But, sitting close to the Master (that is Upanishad), you catch many things… You catch the inexpressible… You catch something that is indescribable.

Here, words are simply a vehicle; a lot more flows in-between the words – energy moves… Grace moves… joy moves… and that transforms life.

There is an innate tendency to unite… because love is to unite.

So what does “love” mean?

It is the tendency to unite, to become one.

To become one with what? What is this tendency to unite?

In this entire creation, there is a tendency to become “one”, to get back to “one”… because “two” is painful. Going, from two, to one, is the purpose of creation. Everything wants to merge into something… And what is this?

We call this love. The rishis call it “Yoga”. So “yoga” means union, uniting… and uniting what?

That is what we will see in this Yogasara Upanishad…

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Weggis, Switzerland

Surrender and Bondage

Weggis, Switzerland

The Upanishad begins with a prayer… Prostrations to Para Brahma, Shree Ganesha, Saraswati, Devi, all Rishis and Yogis.

“ऊँ योवे ब्रह्मन् विद्धाति पूर्वं योवे वेदान्श्चापर्हिनोति तस्मै तमहदेव आत्मा बुद्धि प्रकाशं मुमुक्षुर्वै शरणमहं प्रपद्ये ऊँ शांति: शांति: शांति:”

“Om yo ve Brahman viddhati pūrvam yo ve vedānschaparhinoti | Tasmay tamahadeva ātmā buddhi prakāsham mumukshurvay sharanamaham prapadye || Om Shāntihi Shāntihi Shāntihi”

Translation: “To Him, who ordains Brahma in the beginning, and, who delivers to Him the Knowledge, the Vedas – to that God, who is lighted by His own intelligence – do I go for liberation, do I resort to for refuge.”

Om. Peace, Peace and Peace!”

To gain any knowledge, there needs to be peace, first. I’m speaking now, but if you are not peaceful, you cannot be attentive. If you do not have some degree of peace in the environment, in your mind, and in your soul, then you cannot even hear what I’m saying. You cannot listen to what I’m saying. So, what is first and foremost?

Have peace!

If this atmosphere is disturbed (suppose there is a fire in the atmosphere, or if it is too cold here, or too hot), then, I’m sure you won’t be able to sit. You’ll run away! Isn’t it?

So first of all, you need a peaceful atmosphere around you… and then, your mind needs to be here! If your mind is in your shop, in your business, in your car, or in your home, then too, you won’t be able to hear me totally. If your mind is somewhere else, then, there is no point in sitting close to me! So, you need peace in your mind, in your environment, and in your soul – three types of peace. Of course, you all have that, for if a soul is totally restless, it cannot even come near the knowledge, till such a time that it gains a little peace.

In the realm of the mind, like attracts like. If the soul is peaceful, then it attracts a peaceful environment and peaceful people around it.

So how can one attain this peace? What is the way?

This says, “By adoring the Divine, recognizing the Divine – that Divine, which has no beginning and no end, that Divine, from which all knowledge comes up.”

The thought of computer chips came up in one mind; so also the thought of making television sets, or making rockets and sending them to the moon… Where did all these thoughts come from? They came and expressed themselves through the respective brains, but where did they come from? What is their source?

See, that is the Consciousness. That is the imperishable, all-pervading Consciousness, which is responsible for all knowledge, all technology, all science, all arts, all poetry… That Consciousness, that Divinity, that Infinity, is Brahman… and that is responsible for the creativity, maintenance and transformation of the world, of the Universe. “I adore and I bow down to That.”

Usually children ask the question, “If God created us, who created God?” This is a puzzle because we always see a beginning and an end to something. So God must have been born at some time, and must die sometime; or God must be somebody, somewhere, sitting high up in heaven! This is made clear in the very first sentence: No! It’s self-illuminant, and it illumines – like the sun illuminates! It is because the sun is there, that you are able to see everything in the world. Everything goes around the sun. Now, who illuminates the sun?

Nobody! It is self-effulgent. With a torch, you see everything else, but you don’t need something more to see the torch, which, itself, is lit! In the same way, you are here, and you don’t need any other proof to tell you, that you are here! You are proof, good enough, to say that you are here!

Someone asks you, “What is the proof that you are here? Tell me!”

You will say, “I’m here!”

No! What is the proof? Do you need some other proof to say that you are? You don’t! You are self-effulgent! Your very being, your very presence, is good enough! Certain things cannot be proved. If they are proved, they will be false, because the proof itself will be false! Do you see what I’m saying?

So if someone tries to prove that God exists, the person is committing a big mistake, because the means, themselves, by which one proves that there is a God, are wrong. Whatever can be proved, can be disproved also… and the Divine is beyond proof.

“Mumukshurvay Sharanamaham prapadye”

How does freedom come?

If you are carrying a load on your head, there cannot be any freedom! It’s ironic that freedom and surrender go hand-in-hand! A big irony!

“Mumukshu” is one, who is anxious, who wants freedom.

“Sharanamahamprapadhye” – “I am surrendering because I want freedom.”
