TIPS ON HOW TO WRITE A GOOD PLAY
It is fundamental to point out here that playwriting like every other literary endeavor begins with sitting down alone and putting your imagination to work. Perhaps you have been to a theater to see a play. You leave the theater satisfied that you have seen a good play. Didactic perhaps, compelling, interesting, enthralling, and scintillating performance! You stare at the large audience the play attracts, and marvel at the excellent theatrical piece put together by the playwright. A desire stirs up within you. You begin to desire to write a play, possibly a play the whole nation will crave to see, but you don’t know your left from your right. You will need talent!
You’ve got the talent? I think I can hear you say, ‘yes I think so’. Okay, the first step is to come up with a concept. What do you want to write about? What story do you want to tell? What issues do you want to highlight or address? Your play could even be corrective in nature or a way of campaigning against a government policy you think should be thrown into the thrash can of history. It could even be a play that could make audiences laugh and fart so much and forget about their worries for a while, not getting up until the final curtain is drawn. Your play could be such a tragic one that leaves audiences with tears coursing down their eyes, or your play could take on a grave theme, but still make comedy all around it—This technique, I achieved in my first play—ASHES OF A BROKEN HOME.
Whatever you want to write on, the tips below, in all fairness, should be of immense benefit.
