Igotinvolvedwithleadershipatgrouplevelsquiteearly.Sayatabouttheageof14IheldapositionontheexecutivecounciloftheteenagersfellowshipinmylocalChurch–theD/LineBranchofTheChurchofGodMissionInternationalinPortHarcourt.Honestlyandobviously,Ihadnoknowledgewhatsoeverofwhatitmeanttoleadpeopleorbepartofgroupofleaders.Atthattimeitwasjustsomethingofmuchfuntobeputupforanelectionandhavemostofthegirlsvotetomakemewinbyamajority.ElectionswereorganisedandconductedbytheAssistantPastoratthattime.Irememberhimquitewell–Rev.IselemaDavid-West.AverySpirit-filled,intelligentandeloquentexcellentpreacherhewasandstillis.Hewasinchargeofgettingaleadershipteamtogetherfortheteenagersinchurchandoverseeingtheirgrowthandrelevancetothechurchcommunity.

Sowhiletheelectionsweregoingon,wehadloftyconceptsflyingthroughourmindsonhowourtimeasleaderswouldbedifferentandspecial,andhowwewouldnodoubtdobetterthanothers,andhowwecouldn’tjustwaittohitthegroundrunningtobringtobirthalltheplanswehadinmind.Butyouknow,wehaven’treachedtheinterestingpart,I’msureyoucanguessthat.Allthefiresofexcitementwouldsoonquenchinthefaceofreality.Inafewmonths’timeIrealisedthatwewereonlyaboutfourpersonswhoranthegroupandthiswasoutofabout12ExecutiveCouncilmembers.Alltheplansandideaswehadbirthedasacouncilwerebeingexecutedbyjustafewofus.
Thenwebegantoseefailurescreepin.Wecouldn’torganisetheyearlyeventforthatfirstyearandtheyearpassed.Admittedly,wewereallstudentsinSecondarySchoolandwehadtogobacktoschool.Agoodnumberofusattendedboardingschoolssoitmeantwealwayshadlimitedtimetoplanandexecuteplans.Butwealwaysfailedtotakeadvantageoftheholidaysandwejustcouldn’tmakethedifferencewethoughtwecouldmake.
