What does it mean to create and innovate? Creativity is what changes and shapes the world. It’s what sets the successful, awe-inspiring person apart from the rest, to the envy of those who wish to be the same way.
As a businessperson, the chances are good that you struggle with creativity. You want to develop new ideas and change the game in your line of work. In your case, increasing your creativity also means increasing your clout and improving your bottom line.
But, it’s hard to be creative. The ideas just don’t seem to flow and you can’t make any headway. You’re stuck for new ideas, hanging on to the old ones by a thread. This terrifies you, because creativity is a form of currency in the information age.
It’s time you learned how to become more creative and generate an endless stream of amazing and innovative and awe-inspiring ideas of your own before you get left behind.
With as much stock as we put into creativity today, investigating where it comes from is a fairly recent phenomenon. A myriad of researchers and self-designated experts have set out to break down what makes the creative mind tick. I’m fascinated with this area of study, and I’ve uncovered some shocking information. Most importantly of all, this information is going to help you become instantly more creative.
You have to first understand why you are the way you are. Why are other people more creative than you? Why do your competitors have better ideas? Why can’t you seem to innovate and get ahead? These questions, and more, will be answered in short order.
It’s no wonder you want to be more creative. The fact is that creativity is valued more today than ever before in history. The barrier to entry for new products, services, and businesses is very low. It’s harder than ever to stand out in the crowd if you don’t create and innovate.
It’s become really trendy to focus on creativity in business and life in general. We value things like TED talks: motivational videos dedicated to innovation and new ideas. We envy the creativity of others and press ourselves to create, create, create, and innovate, innovate, innovate. It’s the only way to stand out in a crowded field of businesses and organizations trying to achieve the same things we are. But, you’re still not getting it.
It’s very easy to think of other people as being more creative, especially if you consider yourself to be a logical thinker. I’m certain you can think of at least a dozen people you deem to be more creative and innovative than yourself. But, you’re tired of other people getting the kudos and boosts from their innovations, just because they were born with something you think is missing in your own life.
Or, maybe you don’t inherently care about creativity much at all. You think of it as a regenerated buzzword you should check out because all the self-help business gurus say you should. You’re fine with the status quo... creating new ideas is scary anyway.
No matter which camp you fall into, I think you’ll soon agree that creativity is absolutely essential to your success as a businessperson. You’ll also discover that creativity is not something certain people are born with and others can never achieve. You’re going to have all the skills you need to be more creative. Soon, others will be looking to you as a shining example of what they should be doing.
When you think of creative businesspeople, the late Steve Jobs might be the first one that comes to mind. He was someone who could put a twist on any old idea, constantly turning out things that were new and shiny.
A portable digital music player? He wasn’t the first, but he was the only one to change the course of history with his portable digital music player. A computer tablet? He wasn’t the first, but he was the only one to change the course of history with his tablet. There didn’t seem to be any bounds to the creativity of Steve Jobs.
But, with all he achieved, was Steve Jobs really better, smarter, and more creative than us? Where did he get his good ideas? Some say he was a tortured soul, as many creative people are. He also valued the art of creativity—he depended on it. He wasn’t happy creating the same things everyone else was creating; he wanted more.
In short, he was an expert at exercising his creativity muscle. He formed connections from old ideas and concepts, put a twist on them that was infinitely better, and made something new and innovative nearly every time out of the gate.
Or, consider the creative minds of the crew at Google. Google came out of nowhere over the past decade and a half. Now, the name “Google” has become synonymous with the Internet.
The heads at Google are always testing and trying new concepts and ideas. They’re consistently ahead of the curve when it comes to search and Internet tools. They are also world-famous for giving their employees a lot of downtime and plenty of time to be creative.
There is something to that—I’m sure of it. Google thrives on offering a different experience from any other site or search engine. They have their hand in so many projects that it’s mindboggling. Sure, not every project is a hit, but there is never a time when they aren’t innovating, creating, and exploring.
Is the Google crew more inherently creative than you are? Absolutely not—that’s something we’ll explore further on.
Steve Jobs left us with the words, “creativity is just connecting things.” Everything new is really old, reimagined in a new and groundbreaking way. Every new idea builds on the ones before it. We’re never starting from nothing.
What can you start connecting to change your life, your business, and the world? You have access to the same information, history, objects, and mind space as everyone else. It’s time you figured out what “they” are doing that you are not.
Apple created an untold number of innovations under the leadership of Steve Jobs. They weren’t the first tech company to innovate and they certainly won’t be the last. They have a process that makes them more creative and innovative than most.
There are bound to be companies in your industry that seemingly do it better. They win the acclaim, come up with the best new product ideas, and get all the “superstars” touting their business.
You’re not different from them. You’re just going about the creative process differently—you’re doing it the hard way. I’d wager a bet that you’re not tapping into more than 10% of your creative power, and it’s time to change that.
It’s also time to get rid of the “us versus them” attitude. You can’t fall into the trap of thinking that “they” are creative and you are not. I repeat- there’s no inherent creativity inside of them that you can’t tap into as well.
You are incredibly creative, even if you don’t know it yet. You have the power to innovate and generate new, incredible ideas, whenever you would like to. You can make new connections to work better, smarter, and faster, and to make waves and innovations in your marketplace.
You should know there’s a lot of debate as to whether some have a naturally creative personality. Some believe that ideas and innovations come more easily to those who naturally see the world in a different light. It’s true that the average person doesn’t tend to invent groundbreaking things.
Others don’t believe creativity is an inherent trait given to a select few. They believe creativity is based on practice, circumstances, motivation, and smarts. They believe we are all born with the creativity gene. This is the camp that thinks creativity can be learned.
I’m in the latter camp, and I think you will soon agree. There isn’t a single person on this planet that can’t become creative, and I’m going to lay out everything you need to know to make it happen for you.
Consider the natural creativity of children. Think of the children in your life–especially 3-year-olds. They have such incredible sense of wonder about the world and everything in it.
They want to know who, what, where, when, why, and how. They spend their free time staring up at the stars in the sky. They look intently at the blades of grass on the ground. They dream of all the amazing things they can do in life. Children are naturally curious and love exploring their world. They are naturally creative dreamers. They are, in essence, what we should strive to be.
But, there’s something that happens as we get older that dashes that creativity and wonder. Life gets in the way—we grow up and conform.
Some people are thankfully able to hold onto their childlike curiosity and creativity. Others forget about it and never reclaim the skill of being creative. That’s what it is, after all–a skill. They figure it’s gone for good—they are adults now, destined to live a life like every other adult they know.
Others, like you, realize it’s a tragedy to lose a child’s sense of wonder and creativity. You realize there’s a deficit in your ability to be creative and generate new ideas. You realize creativity is a skill like any other–and it’s time to reawaken that part of your mind. It’s time to reclaim what children know from the start—that the world is a wonderful place, full of possibility.
It’s very interesting to study the history of creativity, because it isn’t something we were always aware of. I mentioned earlier that the study of creativity is a fairly new concept. But, even the idea of creativity is a new concept.
Before the period of Enlightenment, imagination, creativity, and inspiration were thought to come from above–from God or from whichever higher being the person believed in. The word “inspiration” itself means “breathed upon.” The concept being that it was given as a gift, and at the higher being’s discretion. People thought that creativity came from outside of them and was handed to them by an outside force.
They were better off than most of us today who don’t pay any attention to creativity and inspiration at all. But, some possibly also held back because they expected creativity to strike whenever God deemed it so.
You can compare the thought that creativity is in our DNA to the thought that some are more gifted athletically. Some are able to “run like the wind” because of their physical makeup, others plod along at a much slower pace. For example, the tortoise vs. the hare story.
The ability to innovate and create is different though, as we’ll see.
These days, we don’t think creativity comes from outside of us, we believe it comes from within. Unfortunately, many people believe that creativity is a gift given to a select few. They believe that if you were born without it, you’re stuck in a box for good.
I’ll say it again a different way, because I think it’s really sad. There is a large group of people, especially in business, who believe that not only does creativity not fall from the sky, but it’s not even possible to have unless you’re naturally gifted with it.
That’s not the right point of view to take at all. Creativity is a skill you absolutely have inside of you—everyone does. I hope by now, you believe that.
Many experts believe creativity is something comprised of a set of cognitive skills. These skills can be learned, sharpened, and enhanced over time, leading to incredibly creative ideas and experiences.
When I use the term “skill”, I don’t mean that creativity can only happen to those who have mastered it. It really takes very little to amp up your creativity. You’re part of a very special group that is going the extra mile to make that happen.
Even the top person in a field or area of business might be desperately uncreative. It won’t take much to set yourself apart from them.
