It is night, two people are sitting in a car, a man and a woman,

Annabell and David. She turns up the volume on the car radio because there is a report on the disappearance of various people under mysterious circumstances, no dead bodies and no ransom demands.

ANNABELL

It's very unusual that so many people disappear without a trace in our small harbor town of all places.

DAVID

Yes, I think so too. Do you think the mafia could be behind it?

ANNABELL

Somehow they're always involved. Let's go to Alberto's warehouse!

DAVID

Good idea, we're sure to run into Alberto.

He drives off and after a few minutes they reach their destination.

The two of them stop in front of the warehouse, get out of the car and walk to the entrance gate. David rattles the gate.

DAVID

It is locked.

ANNABELL

Well, let's just go again.

The two look at each other and start laughing. David pulls the lock off with one hand and throws it behind him. They walk through the gate.

Now the two policemen are standing in the warehouse. They look around and start searching, she opens a box, he looks at files. Suddenly four sinister figures stand behind them - it's Alberto and three of his henchmen.

ALBERTO

Turn around very slowly!

As he says this, he points a gun at the police officers. They do not turn around and simply continue their search.

ALBERTO (raised voice)

I said turn around!

David turns around briefly and shows his police badge.

DAVID

We are allowed to do that.

He turns around again and is just reaching for a file folder when Alberto shoots first David and then Annabell. Both fall to the floor, hit. Alberto puts the gun away and points to the two motionless bodies.

Alberto

Let's get them into the car!

Alberto goes to David with a henchman, the other two go to Annabell.

ALBERTO

Take the feet, I'll take the arms!

David jumps up, Alberto and his assistant stumble in shock and fall over backwards.

DAVID

No thanks, I prefer to walk myself.

Annabell is now back on her feet and pats her clothes clean.

ANNABELL (strict)

Take us to Fredo!

The mobsters have just got up again. Alberto looks at the two of them.

ALBERTO

You must be those special cops. I've heard a lot about you, really weird stuff. But you seem to live up to your reputation.

DAVID

We want to speak to Fredo!

Alberto circles Annabell and whispers in her ear.

Alberto

If you hadn't refused to work for us, you might have been promoted, have you ever thought about it?

David approaches Alberto menacingly, but Alberto moves away.

DAVID

Enough already...!

Alberto makes a defensive stance with his hands.

ALBERTO

OK, take it easy! We'll take you to Fredo, just follow us.

ANNABELL (strict)

What are we still waiting for?

She puts her hand on David's shoulder as she walks past. They all leave the warehouse.

The two policemen get into their car, the four mobsters into theirs and they all drive off.

Annabell and David drive after the criminals and reach Bistro Fredos.

They park in front of the bistro and everyone gets out. Alberto lets Annabell go first and everyone follows them

They walk through the half-full bistro, people pause their conversations and stare suspiciously at the policemen as they pass. They reach a door. After a knock, it opens and Alberto, Annabell and David enter the room. Fredo is sitting at his desk talking on the phone, with an assistant standing behind him.

FREDO (speaks into the telephone)

I'll call back later.

Fredo hangs up the phone, stands up and gestures to the chairs in front of his desk. Annabell sits down, David remains standing.

FREDO

Can I offer you something? The lady might like a garlic pizza and her companion a vegan bratwurst.

Fredo, Alberto and the assistant laugh.

ANNABELL

Very funny. We're here to ask you a few questions.

FREDO

I will of course try to help you, what is it about?

ANNABELL

It's about the missing persons...

FREDO

No, we definitely have nothing to do with that. It's really not our style to make people disappear without a trace, that doesn't put anyone off. So if there's nothing else, there's the door.

He gestures towards the door and turns to Alberto.

FREDO

Take our guests to the door.

Annabell stands up.

ANNABELL

Goodbye.

FREDO

And say hello to the chief of police for me.

Annabell and David turn around briefly, then leave the office and the bistro.

Now the two of them get into their car, she waits a moment until she starts the engine and drives off.

Now they are sitting in the car, David is typing on his cell phone and Annabell looks over at him.

DAVID

You hesitated for a moment before starting the engine.

ANNABELL

That's right!

DAVID

Can you tell me why?

Annabell pulls over and stops between the country road and the dirt track. They look at each other.

ANNABELL

I just needed a break.

She pulls her cell phone out of her pocket and places it on the dashboard.

ANNABELL

I need some fresh air, will you come with me?

She points to his cell phone and then to the dashboard, he nods to her and puts his cell phone down as well.

DAVID

Good idea! I'll just take my steak with me, I'm starving.

He rustles the paper and they get out.

It is still dark outside. She steps onto a country lane and he does the same.

DAVID

You think we're being bugged?

He looks at her as they stroll along the path.

ANNABELL

Yes, I know, it sounds paranoid.

DAVID

Not necessarily, I've already noticed a few incidents in the district.

ANNABELL

ANNABELL

DAVID
