Book Abstract for Finding Freedom

Omid Scobie first gained access to the royal family when he became the European bureau chief for US Weekly. His interest in them grew when he became a part of a small group of reporters invited to events that the royal family attended. His initial focus was on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. It dramatically shifted when news reached him that Prince Harry was dating Suits star, Meghan Markle. He had followed the couple since and built an extensive list of reliable sources on them, which became essential in writing Finding Freedom.

Finding Freedom: Harry, Meghan, and The Making of a Modern Royal Family is a book by journalist Omid Scobie and producer Carolyn Durand. It's a biography of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that primarily focuses on their relationship and the hardships they faced that ultimately led to their exit from the royal family.

Scobe was the European bureau chief for US Weekly when he started reporting on the British royal family. He initially focused on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge due to the public interest in them. The direction of his coverage changed all of a sudden when it came to his attention that Prince Harry was dating Meghan Markle, star of the legal drama Suits. Doubts surrounded this lead, but after Scobe received a call from a friend confirming the story's authenticity, he had followed the couple's journey since.

TV producer and journalist Carolyn Durand later approached Omid Scobe with the idea of collaborating on a book about Meghan and Prince Harry. Their partnership was a suitable one; Durand had sources in Buckingham Palace. Scobe had access to Harry and Meghan's' inner circle, aides, and senior courtiers, among others. They initially set out to publish the book in the first half of 2019 after Archie's birth but held back because of a potentially bigger story: there was trouble with the Sussexes.

It soon became apparent that Harry and Meghan were unhappy, most of all, with the British media's incessant "bullying" of Meghan. Prince Harry had likened the circumstances to his late mother, Princess Diana. She died in a car crash while speeding away from the paparazzi. The couple revealed that racism and press intrusion were the main reasons for their unhappiness. They wished to live independent lives to rid themselves of such unwarranted scrutiny.

There's no denying the countless tabloid articles critiquing Meghan's every move, going as far as connecting her consumption of avocados to human rights issues. They compare this instance to the Duchess of Cambridge's preference for avocados during her pregnancy, which the media complimented. This "double standard" when it came to Meghan didn't stop there. The media called her cradling of her baby bump as awkward and attention-seeking, while they labeled Kate's as "tender cradling." The royal family's "silence" in the matter despite reported appeals by the couple added to their motivation to leave.

Scobe and Durand investigated the matter. They redirected their biography's focus to be a tell-all book on how this modern royal couple came to the decision  that they had to leave.

Finding Freedom recounts previously unpublished information about Harry and Meghan's courtship. This includes their first date at Soho House in London and the discussions of marriage with palace aides just a year after they met.

It details Meghan's reaction to her estranged siblings' bashing and Princess Michael's donning of a blackamoor brooch. Just as people speculated, she did receive royal lessons from the queen herself. The latter reportedly looked after her well during their trip together. Scobe and Durand didn't fail to discuss viral news about Meghan's supposedly terrible behavior. One viral story purporting this was that she made Duchess Kate cry at one point. This incident, among others, continued to cause a rift between brothers Harry and William.

Finding Freedom provides a picture of Meghan that is different from the widespread media coverage she has received since her marriage to Prince Harry. In this one, she isn't the ambitious and controlling woman who forced her husband to abandon his royal duties. She's his guiding light and cheerleader towards the life outside of the monarchy that he'd always wanted.

Crevices in Harry and William's relationship surfaced, not when he introduced Meghan to him in Kensington Palace. The meeting went well according to sources, and William had been welcoming. The brothers slowly drifted apart after William, whom people know to be protective of Harry, told him not to "rush" his romance with "this girl."

It's not all drama with Finding Freedom, though. The authors included exciting facts such as Prince Harry's secret Instagram account. It also shares Meghan's hostage and kidnap training with the British Army before becoming part of the royal family.

News of this book prompted Harry and Meghan's spokesperson to release a statement that the couple did not authorize this biography. Scobe also wrote a disclaimer at the beginning of the book that Harry and Meghan had no personal contribution to the book. They gained all the information contained within through their extensive sources, which had access to the royal couple.
