Despite the fact that they originate from different cultures and have different religious views, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have developed a friendship based on love and trust. Both were subjected to challenging circumstances, yet they still managed to remain among the happiest and most optimistic men. Known as Tenzin Gyatso by his devotees, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama portrays himself as a modest Buddhist monk. He was accepted as the reincarnation of the previous 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso, when he was just two years old and was given the name Lhamo Dhondup. At the age of 15, he ascended to the position of Dalai Lama, the political leader of Tibet. In the same year, the People's Republic of China invaded Tibet. Fearing murder, he and hundreds of supporters fled to Dharamshala in northern India, where they set up an alternative government to replace the existing one. Since then, the Dalai Lama has taken a number of steps toward the establishment of an independent Tibetan state inside the People's Republic of China. As part of his humanitarian activities, the Dalai Lama has also given hundreds of conferences, talks, and workshops across the globe. In 1989, he was given the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
