Novelist Matt Haig has never shied away from discussing his battle with mental health, in fact, it is the underlying message in his novels and it is this that makes him such a compelling writer and person. Mental health is an increasing concern in modern-day society and that is why the world needs people like Haig who are willing to talk about their struggle and by doing so invite others to share theirs. His novels, both fiction and non-fiction, provide people with an avenue to begin discussing depression and anxiety and finding a way to live through it.
Haig was born in Sheffield, England in 1975 and took his double major in English and History from Hull University. He writes for both adults and children and shot to literary fame in 2015 for his memoir, Reasons to Stay Alive which deals with his experiences with anxiety and depression. Since then, Haig has put out a strong message to all of his readers telling them that against all adversity, thriving is the only way forward. In his most recent novel, The Midnight Library, Haig presents a young woman, Nora Seed, who ends her life and comes to find herself in a mysterious library suspended between life and death. Here, she is given a series of alternative realities to live and in taking these other paths, she comes to learn valuable lessons. Dealing with the human condition, existentialism, and questions about the meaning of life, Haig is a writer with a message for us all—life's a journey and there are bumps in the road but you can’t stop walking because it’s the journey that matters, not the destination.
