How to Approach Job Search

Step 1

Who are you? What are your skills? What values are important to you?

Any job search activity has to start with self-reflection. Irrespective of the fact that you may be a graduating student, student pursuing internship, candidate returning to work after a sabbatical, someone who is looking for a change in career or relocating.

What is self-reflection?

Self-reflection is the process of examining personal values, beliefs, styles of communication and expe riences. This gives an in-depth understanding about oneself. This can be achieved through a Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threats (SWOT) analysis.

To ensure that the SWOT is effective, you should include feedback from all your colleagues, peers, clients, etc.

A detailed picture of SWOT is given below. You could develop your own SWOT based on your self-analysis.

For getting a complete picture, solicit feedback from people you interact with both professionally and personally. If you are a student, then your professors and friends would give you valuable inputs.

Do Psychometric testing for self-evaluation.

Do Self-Assessment by asking yourself the following questions:

What motivates you?

What type of work energises you?

What are your priorities?

What skills, knowledge and experience do you possess?

What is the length and breadth of your experience?

What do you like least in your current job?

What do you like most in your current job?

Now you will have a complete picture about yourself. You would have identified your values, interests, skills, personality traits, experience, goals, strengths and weaknesses. You have established your priorities.

According to a twenty-year analysis of graduates of Yale University, researchers asked graduates whether they had committed themselves in writing to what they want to accomplish in life. Only 3% had taken time to write their goals. Twenty years later, the class was surveyed. The 3% who had laid out research inputs, established their goals and were more satisfied with their lives than those who had not - 97% of the wealth of the class was in the hands of the same 3%.

Step Two

Explore Career Options

With over 100 job titles to choose from, the most difficult step is to identify your ideal career path. Once your Self-Reflection Analysis is over, you will have a complete picture of your skills, interests, aspirations, values and priorities. Then it will become easier for you to assess whether a particular occupation is right for you or not. Use your self reflection to identify options that meet your priorities, skills and interests. Review your assessments and check which positions align best with your interests, skills and passions.

It is important that you align your job to your skills, interests and aspirations. Choose a career which matches your aspirations. For achieving success in your career, the job role should be a perfect fit to your aspirations and skills. At times, people take up jobs which come to them without proper thought and alignment to their aspirations and interests which inevitably leads to job disillusionment.

Find out what career options are open for you. Do a research on which industries and organisations are offering these options and identify those which meet your priorities. You can find out these details through your contacts, business and social networking sites, also by attending job fairs, educational fairs seminars and conferences.

What skill sets are required for your chosen job?

For a candidate with work experience, it may so happen that the profile which excites you has a certain skill set requirement and you may not have all the skills, qualifications or experience required to take up that role. In such a case, you might need to enhance your skill set to improve your job prospects. This can be achieved by getting the relevant qualification, expertise, or experience.

As a fresher, it is very essential to set your career goals first. Develop and harness skills as per your area of career interest. Have an open mind and attitude towards understanding business. Above all, a passion and zeal to succeed in what you do is of utmost importance.

Step Three

The third step involves developing your Resume to target your intended career goal. Develop your credentials (Cover Letter, Resume) with a focus on your understanding of the employer's industry and goals and how you can meet them. Your resume should reflect how you are best fitted for the job you are applying for.

This step is discussed in detail in section one and two of this book.
