Author's Note

IliveineasternGermany, only about ten miles from the Czech border. From home, and also from my office on the Vilseck Army installation, the sound of cannons going off and gunfire is a regular occurrence, since this is a major staging and training area for soldiers.

So, when considering the theme of sisters-in-arms, I naturally turned to the military. But I found myself not wanting to write about the current war in Ukraine. Instead, I fell back on research I’d recently done on the terrorist insurgent groups in Syria. I put together a team of military women and gave them a dicey situation to deal with.

I enjoyed their wild ride as I wrote the story—never quite sure what lay around every corner—and I hope readers will find a thrilling and satisfying adventure as they follow this band of scheming women.

A Band of Scheming Women

StaffSergeantDakotaFerguson held out her paper plate and accepted a charred patty from the Army unit’s appointed burger flipper. The smell of the grilling meat made her mouth water, but the coating of dust which instantly settled on the greasy burger dampened her appetite a few degrees.

She only wished it could do the same for the scorching temperatures in southern Syria.

She tossed her head, liking how light it felt and the way her hair swished against her cheek. She’d taken a pair of shears to her long dark hair first thing after rising that morning, chopping and shaping until she felt free from the heavy, heat-binding locks.

Only after cutting it to ear level did she visit Sergeant Libby’s quarters and ask her to fine-tune it into something passing as attractive.

Old school music from The Beach Boys played over speakers set on rickety stands, and a blow-up pool surrounded by lawn chairs dominated the center of the compound. The water in the pool was murky, full of sand and less appealing additives. A limp flamingo floated on the surface, its head hanging dejectedly to the side.

Despite the disheartening centerpiece, the beach party was in full swing, bikini-clad girls boogying, men sporting open Hawaiian shirts—or no shirt at all—joined in or watched from the sidelines. Shouts and laughter from the makeshift volleyball court occasionally rose to compete with the thumping music.

Dakota stood for a moment, just taking it in, breathing deeply and enjoying the respite from the constant strain of always being on high alert. Though the major terrorist groups, like ISIS and al-Qaeda, had been splintered and weakened, their factions were regrouping and gathering strength in the never-ending conflicts of the Middle East.

Nothing like a little job security to make a girl feel right at home.

She spotted a woman she liked, a trauma surgeon named Claire Carmona, sitting with her boyfriend at a picnic table partially shaded by a large beach umbrella. Sliding onto the bench beside them, she winced as her bare thighs met the solar-heated wooden surface.

“Yow! I just sacrificed a layer of skin to the sun god of this desert paradise.”

“Ah,” Claire said, “so you’re the reason he’s beaming down on us with such…” She paused, searching for the right word.

“Blistering abandon?” supplied Shane Lee, her boyfriend. He was a Signal Corps officer, and a good man to have around since he always seemed to have his finger on the pulse of the garrison.

Dakota took a bite of her burger, pleased to find it was only slightly gritty. She’d eaten worse. Swallowing, she said, “I hear they’re playing a movie on the big screen tonight. Any idea what’s showing?”

Before anyone had a chance to answer, a siren blared over the speakers, wailing up and down the scale, interspersed with a voice warning them of an imminent attack. Claire immediately rose and gave Shane a quick kiss. “Stay safe,” she said as she rushed off to be with her patients in the hospital.

Shane shoved half a hotdog in his mouth and gave Dakota a thumbs up before hurrying away to the TOC, the Tactical Operations Center, where he’d be busy coordinating communications during and after the crisis.

Dakota considered taking her plate with her to the bunker, but abandoned the idea when a blast rang out behind her, shaking the ground and sending up a wave of dirt and sand.
