Chapter 1:Introduction to Yoga
WHATis yoga? How does it come about? And what are the health benefits, if any, of constantly engaging in yoga exercises?
Yoga, as seen from the historical analysis, is an ancient practice that originated in India over 5,000 years ago.
It is a holistic approach to health and wellness that encompassesphysical postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and ethical principles.
Interestingly in today’s word, yoga is practiced all over the world and has gained widespread popularity due to its numerous health benefits. Therefore, for the purpose of clarity, we are going to look into the definition of yoga, its brief history, and the different types of yoga.
Definition of Yoga
The word “Yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit word "yuj," which means to unite or join. It is a practice that aims to bring the mind, body, and spirit into oneness and/or harmony, thereby promoting overall health and wellbeing.
According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a classical text on yoga, yoga is defined as the "cessation of the fluctuations of the mind."
In modern times, yoga is often associated with physical postures or asanas. However, and contrary to what many may think, asanas are only one aspect of yoga.
