William Shakespeare was a playwright and poet born in 1564. He is one of the great names in English literature, most famous for his Elizabethan plays, so named after Queen Elizabeth the First (1558-1603) who reigned at the time of their creation. Doubts which have been raised about his historical existence are now largely disproved, though certain periods of his life remain a mystery to historians. His 37 plays are generally divided into four categories: the historical dramas such as Richard III, comedies such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, tragedies such as Hamlet and his last plays such as The Tempest. In the 1600s Shakespeare's theatre company was considered one of the best in London and was resident at the Globe Theatre. Shakespeare died in 1616.
A Midsummer Night's Dream is a light-hearted comedy written between 1592 and 1595. The play tells the tale of the romantic misadventures of two couples whose lives are complicated by magical beings controlled by Titania and Oberon, and a group of amateur actors (The Mechanicals) who seek to stage a play at the Duke's wedding. In the end, love and magic finally exist in harmony and all ends well. Shakespeare's scintillating plot is full of action, and invites its audience to participate in a light-hearted yet very real reflection on illusion and the theatre. The play is illustrative of the freedom Shakespeare exercises in his works, immersing his characters in a world of fantasy.
