Benjamin Constant was born in Lausanne in 1767 to an aristocratic Protestant family. His life began with loss as his mother died during childbirth. From a young age, he had several private tutors and showed great intellectual maturity early on. He began to compose his first poems and completed a novel at the age of 12. He spent his childhood travelling between Belgium, Switzerland, England, Germany and France. He later regularly attended gatherings and all his peers welcomed his eloquence and sense of humour. He published Adolphe in 1816, between two journeys, and accepted a job at a French literary magazine, Mercure de France, for one year. He then left the world of writing to enter politics as a great defender of liberty. He died in Paris in 1830 at the age of 63.
