About the Author
Aidan hugged Vicki as she strode to their table at Ferrari’s. “How are you, love?” He kissed her cheek.
Maurice wrapped his arms around her and kissed her cheek as well.
“I’m surviving. So glad it’s Friday.” She slid into the booth seat across from him.
He and Victoria, “Vicki”, were best friends since middle school, and over the years he’d learned what every smile, frown, slouch, and snort meant. He could read her like a book. “Tough day or is this related to Daniel?”
She sent a sad smile. “No, no relation to Daniel. It’s just been a long week. The state came in so everyone is on high-alert.”
Vicki worked in administration for a large nursing home group outside of Austin. Whenever the state came in to do an audit, Vicki’s stress level went up.
“Wait a minute. What happened to Daniel?” Maurice’s eyebrows pulled together.
He looked over at his boyfriend of two years. “Oh, I forgot to tell you. They broke up last week.”
Maurice stretched a hand to Vicki’s. “Nooo. I’m so sorry to hear that.”
She gave him a half smile.
The waitress approached. “Can I get you anything to drink?”
“Yes, something strong,” she replied.
Aidan grinned and ordered three cocktails and the calamari appetizer.
“So what happened?” Maurice asked.
Over the years he’d gotten to know Vicki, his friend had come to adore her just as much as Aidan did. He could see it. They were like her older brothers, minus the arguing and bickering.
“Um, he sorta broke up with me.”
Maurice tipped his head to the side. “What a loser.”
“At first I was surprised. He gave me no indication that he was unhappy.”
“So what’s his deal?” Maurice did all the talking. Aidan already knew the story, and frankly he thought she was better off without Daniel. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but Daniel wasn’t right for her.
“He said he was bored. It’s okay, really. He did me a favor. He kinda lies a lot.”
Aidan’s eyebrows shot up.
“I think it’s a form of manipulation. I didn’t see it at first—”
“Of course not. You can’t always know when you’re being lied to.” Maurice leveled her with a look.
“Exactly. So things started to reveal themselves over our eight months together. He would do it with other people too. So, you know,” she shrugged her shoulder, “I’m good. It’s for the best.”
Aidan nodded.
Drinks came, followed shortly by the appetizer. Then they ordered their entrees. Aidan also ordered a bottle of red wine. Wine and Italian food went hand in hand.
The conversation flowed as easily as the alcohol. Vicki started to unwind and loosen up. She’d pulled the ponytail holder out of her hair and slipped it around her wrist. Whenever her long brown hair fell in her face, she’d just hook it behind an ear. In the restaurant’s lighting, she almost looked like she had red highlights. She was a beautiful woman by any standard, and the lighting made her only more gorgeous.
