This engaging summary presents an analysis of Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare, a classic tragedy that revolves around the doomed love affair between Mark Antony, one of the Roman Empire’s most respected generals and a member of the ruling Triumvirate, and Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt. Their relationship is put to the test when Antony agrees to marry another woman in order to secure an alliance with one of his fellow Romans, and although he eventually forsakes his homeland and responsibilities as a ruler to be with Cleopatra, the consequences of this decision are much graver than he could ever have imagined… The story of Antony and Cleopatra has been a source of inspiration for many writers over the course of history, but Shakespeare’s version is arguably the best-known iteration of the tale, and has been performed and adapted countless times.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564.Died in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1616.Notable works:Romeo and Juliet (1595), playMacbeth (1606), playThe Tempest (1610), play

Shakespeare is best known as an English playwright who wrote highly influential comedies, tragedies, and history plays as well as sonnets and narrative poems. Shakespeare’s works are studied and performed across the globe even today, and include his 154 sonnets as well as plays such as Julius Caesar (1599), and King Lear (c.1603-1606). William was the son of John Shakespeare, a glove-maker from Stratford; he married Anne Hathaway in his early adulthood, and they went on to have three children together. As a boy, William attended Stratford’s grammar school where he would have studied performance and rhetoric. Latin texts were on his school’s core curriculum, meaning that Shakespeare would have studied writers such as Cicero, Seneca, Virgil, and his favourite poet Ovid. Such texts informed the plots and genres of his own plays, meaning that an understanding of Latin literature is often crucial in order to fully appreciate Shakespeare’s works. As well as being a playwright, Shakespeare was also an actor, and it is speculated that he joined an acting company called the Queen’s Men in Stratford-Upon-Avon.
