Taken from the homelies, letters and documents of Saint Charles Borromeo, these aphorisms share a truly extraordinary linguistic incisiveness. They portray an even greater intellectual than what the four centuries following his canonization would allow us to picture. The artworks chosen for this brief collection of aphorisms are creations by twentieth century artists such as: Ferdinando Ambrosino, Michail Anikushin, Salvatore D’Addario, Alfonso Frasnedi, Donatella Lanzeni, Alekseij Lazykin, Roberto Panichi, Valentin Tereshenko, Saverio Ungheri, Antonio Vacca. Each of these artists pays a special artistic tribute to Saint Charles Borromeo. Edited by Fabiola Giancotti. English translation by Benjamin Ginsborg.

Introduction
Saint Charles Borromeo (Arona 1538-Milan 1584), whose life experience is renowned worldwide, left us a wide array of documents (Acts of the Milanese church, letters, documents regarding the city and the diocese, homilies, writings) which represent the source for these few clear, simple and efficacious aphorisms.
These thoughts are suitable both for reading and for listening, without need for interpretation or further studies.
While reaffirming the integrity of the Saint’s works, these aphorisms do not reflect a specific historical period.
They speak about the Absolute and about eternity. Thus, they speak about actuality.
They are emblematic and are taken from a variety of materials presented within the volumePer ragioni di salute. San Carlo Borromeo nel quarto centenario della canonizzazione 1610-2010(Milan 2010), which we worked on over the course of more than twenty-five years of research.
Aphorisms
— His Holiness says that he grants preventive grace to nobody.
(03.08.1561, in DOC. III)
— May thou not forget to provide [...] all those orientations, forms of aid and favors that are needed to obtain this result….
(TRIV. II, 07.09.1561)
— And should he need to be informed, thou shall do so with thy usual devotion…
(TRIV. II, 13.10.1562)
— No human words may express the true value of the treasure represented by Indulgences, and how much devotion and reverence one should receive them with.
— Let us not be deceived, God cannot be honored merely through words.
— And what sort of soldier would serve under the salary of any captain, yet not carry his banner?
