Yemen has a rich architectural heritage influenced by various civilizations that have occupied the region over the centuries. The traditional architecture of Yemen is characterized by tall, mud-brick buildings with decorative elements such as intricate plasterwork and latticework windows. Some of the most notable examples of traditional Yemeni architecture can be found in the cities of Sana'a and Shibam, which are both designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Modern architecture in Yemen has been influenced by international styles and materials, but traditional elements are often incorporated into contemporary designs. However, the ongoing conflict in Yemen has had a devastating impact on the country's architectural heritage, with many historic buildings damaged or destroyed.

Yemen's architectural heritage is a reflection of the country's rich history and culture. The architectural style of Yemen has been influenced by various civilizations that have occupied the area, including the ancient Kingdom of Sheba, the Islamic Caliphate, the Ottoman Empire, and the British Empire.

The traditional architecture of Yemen is characterized by tall, mud-brick buildings with distinctive features such as intricate plasterwork and latticework windows. These buildings are designed to cope with the harsh desert environment of the country, with thick walls providing insulation against the heat during the day and retaining warmth during the cooler nights. The buildings are often decorated with geometric patterns and calligraphy, reflecting the Islamic artistic traditions of the region.

Two of the most famous examples of traditional Yemeni architecture are found in the cities of Sana'a and Shibam. Sana'a, the capital city, is renowned for its distinctive tower houses, which can reach up to six stories in height. These towering structures are built around an internal courtyard and feature intricate latticework windows and decorative plasterwork. Shibam, located in the Hadhramaut region, is known as the "Manhattan of the desert" due to its skyline of tall, mud-brick buildings. The city is also home to the Al-Mansur Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Yemen.

In recent years, modern architecture has gained popularity in Yemen, with many new buildings constructed using international styles and materials. However, traditional elements are often incorporated into contemporary designs, and architects are encouraged to use locally sourced materials and techniques.

Unfortunately, the ongoing conflict in Yemen has had a devastating impact on the country's architectural heritage. Historic buildings have been damaged or destroyed, and the ongoing conflict has made it difficult to preserve and maintain the remaining buildings. Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to preserve and protect Yemen's architectural heritage, including the development of conservation plans for historic sites and buildings.

Yemen's architecture is not only influenced by the country's history and culture, but also by its geography and climate. The use of mud-brick as a building material is a reflection of the country's arid climate, as mud-brick is an effective insulator against the heat of the day and the cold of the night. The use of locally sourced materials and techniques, such as stone carving and woodwork, is also common in traditional Yemeni architecture.
