Unlock the more straightforward side of Atonement with this concise and insightful summary and analysis!

This engaging summary presents an analysis of Atonement by Ian McEwan, a strikingly nuanced and complex novel about two young lovers in the years during and just prior to the Second World War. Robbie Turner is the groundskeeper for the comparatively wealthy Tallis family, but the social differences between them do not stop love from blossoming between him and Cecilia, the oldest daughter of the family. However, when Cecilia’s younger sister Briony falsely accuses Robbie of rape, events spiral out of control and are complicated further by the outbreak of the war. Atonement is a powerful reflection on the stories we all tell ourselves, and is the eighth novel by Ian McEwan, who is widely regarded as one of the most influential English writers active today.

Born in Aldershot, Hampshire in 1948.Notable works:Enduring Love (1997), novelAmsterdam (1998), novelOn Chesil Beach (2007), novel

Ian McEwan is an English novelist who is widely regarded as one of the most acclaimed contemporary writers. He has published 14 novels to date, with another – Machines Like Me – due to be released in 2019, as well as several screenplays, short stories, and children’s stories. Although widely praised, his works, particularly in the earlier years of his career, have sparked controversy for their often explicit, extreme or political themes, earning him the nickname “Ian MacAbre”. As his career has matured, his work has become less sensationalistic and more focused on character studies set in times of political and social upheaval. McEwan attended the prestigious MA Creative Writing course at the University of East Anglia, which was set up by Malcolm Bradbury (English writer, 1932-2000) and Angus Wilson (English writer, 1913-1991) and has launched the careers of many popular writers. McEwan has been nominated for the Man Booker Prize six times, winning the Prize once for his 1998 novel, Amsterdam. Several of his novels, including Atonement, have been adapted into films.
